Associate/Senior Associate | Industrial and Employment
Slater and Gordon Lawyers are a leading personal injury and class actions law firm where every member of our team has a shared passion for our clients: we are people caring for people.
Our commitment to our people includes offering genuine work-life balance, with a hybrid work environment allowing them to split their time between home and the office. We recognise and reward high performance and have outstanding employee benefits including a week of shutdown leave, paid parental leave, extra-long service leave, together with various ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
What are we looking for?
Our Industrial and Employment Law (I E) Lawyers assist our clients with workplace disputes, disciplinary investigations, unfair dismissals, employment contract reviews, employment separation agreements, underpayment claims, bullying and discrimination complaints and other employment related claims. If you have experience in employment law, or have a passion for industrial relations, then this could be exactly what you are looking for.
This position will have you form part of our wider National I E team, and have you based in Sydney. Ideally you will have some prior knowledge of employment law and have a strong trade union understanding. An understanding of the political landscape is desired.
Previous practicing experience particularly in the employment and industrial law sector including appearances in the relevant jurisdictions. Have a proactive, passionate and results driven nature.
A typical day will have you responsible for the following:
Clients:
- liaise with clients to understand case issues
- manage expectations independently; seeking guidance where appropriate
- conduct and manage new client enquiries
- maintain regular and open communication with clients.
Working with others:
- liaise with other senior lawyers, counsel and external experts as required to clarify and resolve complex legal issues
- supervise, mentor and support junior lawyers and legal support staff when required
Day to day:
- produce quality letters of advice, in a timely manner
- draft court documents when required
- conduct file reviews to identify any key issues
What will you bring?
Ideally, you will have the following skills and attributes:
- degree qualified and at least 3 years post admission experience
- previous experience in Industrial and/or Employment Law and/or Federal and State industrial commissions
- a personal understanding and affinity for the trade union movement
- an understanding of politics
- outstanding communication & interpersonal skills
- ability to exercise empathy and compassion to clients
- experience in running files end to end
- ability to exercise judgement and resolve problems quickly
- a strong team player
