About the office

The Research Integrity and Ethics portfolio oversees and supports the operations of the University's Human Research Ethics Committees, provides training on research integrity and ethics to staff and students, investigates and manages research integrity breaches, and ensures good governance in the research integrity and ethics space through policy and procedure review and renewal. This work fosters the development of the virtue of integrity in our staff and students and a research culture committed to respect for the dignity of the human person.

About the role

The Research Ethics Officer provides high-level administrative support to ensure the smooth operation of the Human Research Ethics portfolio. They offer specialist advice to researchers, support Human Research Ethics Committees (HREC),including acting as the Executive Officer to the committees, effectively manage correspondence and official records relating to research ethics, within an established governance framework guided by multiple, statements, code, policies and processes. The position reports to the Senior Manager, Research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support research ethics and integrity processes through accurate administrative work.
  • Prepare and manage documents, correspondence, and reports with attention to detail.
  • Provide guidance to researchers and staff on ethics-related matters.
  • Keep records up to date and manage data related to research compliance.
  • Ensure timely and professional communication within the team and with stakeholders.
  • Assist with compliance monitoring and reporting for approved research projects.
  • Contribute to investigations of ethics or integrity issues as required.
  • Support and guide new staff on systems and procedures.
  • Organise daily tasks effectively and solve problems within the role.
  • Collaborate with the team to achieve shared goals.
  • Follow university policies and complete other tasks as directed.
Qualifications, skills & experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and quick to learn new software and systems.
  • Experienced in managing formal committees with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Sound understanding of national trends, policies, and developments in research ethics and governance.
  • Demonstrated discretion and responsibility in applying policies and procedures effectively.
  • Excellent time management skills, capable of coordinating complex tasks and meeting tight deadlines in a high-volume environment.
  • Collaborative team player who delivers responsive and high-quality service across functional teams.

  • Critical thinker, who uses initiative to make sound judgements and suggestions, with strong capabilities in clear communication, both written and oral, whilst working independently, often on confidential issues in a sensitive manner.
