Senior FOI Advisor

About the role:

This government entity is a large community-focussed organisation committed to transparency, accountability, and compliance with legislative requirements. Our Governance, Legal & Risk team plays a critical role in ensuring robust governance frameworks and supporting operational excellence across the organisation.

We are seeking a self-sufficient and skilled Senior Freedom of Information Advisor to join our Governance, Legal & Risk business unit. Reporting to the Manager FOI, Privacy & Appeals, you will play a critical role in delivering high-quality, timely Freedom of Information (FOI) services and ensuring compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (VIC) and Professional Standards. This position manages FOI requests end-to-end, provides authoritative advice to internal stakeholders and FOI applicants, and supports privacy-related matters when required. You will also contribute to uplifting organisational awareness of FOI and privacy obligations through training and engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and influence FOI practices across the organisation, ensuring compliance with legislation and Professional Standards.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of FOI requests, including validation, document searches, consultations, and decision-making.
  • Provide clear, professional advice to FOI applicants and internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and lodge documentation for OVIC and VCAT in relation to FOI complaints and appeals.
  • Deliver FOI training programs and maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation and best practices.

About you:

  • Strong knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (VIC) and Professional Standards.
  • Proven experience managing complex FOI requests and providing authoritative advice.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail and ability to meet statutory deadlines under pressure.
