Design Engineer

Position Overview

• Design materials handling systems – cranes, vacuum and mechanical lifting equipment, and custom grippers for both manual and automated handling processes.
• Preparing manufacturing drawings, approval drawings and BOMs.
• Working with the production team to fabricate and build the designed solutions.
• Learn the Schmalz Vacuum Automation & Handling Systems product ranges and apply it on application projects.
• Support end customers, distributors, independent sales reps & company sales engineers with design support questions for the office and occasionally on-site.
• Assist Vacuum Automation and Handling Systems engineers in testing projects.
• Be on customer site as required for review of design details, including public speaking and public presentations, as well as installations and run off support/service calls.
• Support local product development, which includes but is not limited to design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing and product roll-out.
• Collaborate and work with product managers to design and manufacture products from the local product pipeline.
• Work with colleagues in Germany and participate in global product development as needed.
• Revise and update existing drawings reflecting design changes, in collaboration with project manager to ensure consistent documentation of the project.
• Review specifications and other customer documentation if service is requested by the application engineer or project manager.
• Revise and update drawings from Germany headquarters for manufacturing/assembly floor (Melbourne, VIC) to ensure consistent documentation of the project.
• Work with Project Manager on guidelines for drawings which meet and exceed the customer's requirements. Implement these requirements on drawings sent to the customer.
• Interface with machine shops to manufacture designed parts and verify their spec and tolerances with the created drawings.
• Serve as an information source on planning and design of equipment assemblies.
• Maintain notes, design calculations and other documentation (like drawings, bill of materials, list of design parameters, and /performance guarantees) for future reference.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of third-party items and services data base. Review and modify information with collaboration by Project Manager. Make data available to application engineers and project managers.
• Create new part numbers in ABAS and/or PLM.
• Other duties as required relating to CAD database management, PLM, etc.
• Support other colleagues when necessary, including answering phones and assisting in assembly services.

Basic Qualifications (Including Educational Requirements)

• Bachelor's degree in engineering (ME, EE)
• Three or more years of experience in the design, testing, and development of new products
• Proficient in one 3D MCAD package; Solidworks is preferred
• Experience creating engineering drawings
• Materials handling industry experience preferred
• Superior communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team, and function independently.
• Must be able to organise and prioritise work.
• Strong time management skills with an emphasis on professionalism, flexibility, and decided sales and service orientation as well as entrepreneurial inclination.
