Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Learning For Life Autism Centre, Inc. Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

Volunteer Opportunity: Be Our Board Treasurer and Help Drive Impact

Are you a finance professional who wants to use your skills for purpose, not just profit? Do you believe every child should have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances? Join the Learning for Life Autism Centre (L4L) as our volunteer Board Treasurer and play a pivotal role in supporting long-term, sustainable impact for autistic and neurodivergent children.

About Learning for Life Autism Centre (L4L)

L4L is a not-for-profit charity that supports autistic and neurodivergent children to build the skills they need to live with independence, confidence, and choice. Our services are evidence-based, collaborative, and equity-driven, we make sure that cost isn't a barrier for the families we support.

We work across early intervention, school and community support, educator training, and family collaboration. Our values: Respect, Trust, Equity, Joy, and Kindness, are lived every day by our team, and guide everything we do.

Your Role

As the Treasurer, you'll bring strategic financial leadership to the Board and work closely with the CEO to support strong financial management, risk oversight, and long-term sustainability. You won't be managing the day-to-day finances (that's in the capable hands of the CEO and finance team), but you'll play a key governance role, reviewing reports, monitoring financial health, and ensuring sound decision-making at board level.

You'll act as thought partner to the CEO and management on financial and accounting matters, for example: responding to auditor feedback, and changes to reporting or accounting approaches. Alongside the Risk, Finance and Governance sub-committee of the Board, you will pressure test financial reporting, budgets, and business cases prior to presentation to the Board.

You'll act as a trusted adviser to the CEO and Board, offering clear and constructive guidance around budgets, reporting, cash flow, and compliance. This includes preparing a Treasurer's Report for each meeting to ensure all Directors are apprised of material information pertaining to the organisation's finances. You'll also help the Board ensure that fundraising income, reserves, and investments are managed responsibly and transparently.

You'll contribute to the broader direction and health of the organisation, and help make sure we can continue delivering our services well into the future.

Time commitment: Approximately 7–10 hours per month, including attendance at bi-monthly Board and Risk Sub-committee meetings. Occasional additional hours may be required during audit periods, budget preparation, or major fundraising events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Oversight:
Support the Board and CEO in making informed financial decisions and planning for long-term sustainability.
  • Monitor Financial Health
: Review financial reports, budgets, and forecasts prepared by management, and raise key risks or opportunities.
  • Support the CEO:
Act as a sounding board and partner to the CEO, providing guidance on financial matters, systems, and decisions.
  • Ensure Good Governance:
Oversee financial audit, compliance, and reporting processes and policies, ensuring L4L meets all obligations.
  • Contribute to Fundraising Strategy:
Provide financial input on major fundraising efforts, and help ensure funds are used and reported on appropriately.
  • Help Build Financial Confidence:
Present information in a way that helps fellow Board members, regardless of financial background, understand and engage with the numbers to execute their Director responsibilities.

What's in It for You?

  • Real Impact: Contribute to an organisation that's changing lives, and know your work makes a tangible difference.
  • Board Experience: Apply and grow your leadership and governance skills in a well-established NFP setting.
  • Meaningful Connections: Join a passionate, purpose-led board and work alongside a supportive CEO and values-driven team.
  • Be Part of Something Bigger: Support a future where neurodivergent children and their families have the support they need to thrive.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who shares our passion for equity, inclusion, and creating meaningful change in the lives of autistic and neurodivergent children.

You'll bring:

  • A strong values alignment:
you care deeply about using your skills for impact, and you're committed to supporting a mission-driven organisation.
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector:
ideally in a governance, finance, or leadership capacity. You understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with NFP financial oversight.
  • A CPA or CA qualification:
or equivalent professional experience in management accounting (preferred), finance, and/or business management.
  • Confidence in financial governance:
you can interpret reports, monitor compliance, and advise on strategic financial matters with clarity and sound judgment.
  • The ability to engage non-financial stakeholders:
you're able to translate complex financial matters into clear, actionable information for the Board and CEO.
  • A collaborative, thoughtful approach:
you're not just across the numbers; you're ready to contribute to broader board discussions and help shape the future of the organisation.

Why Volunteer with Us?

We believe the best decisions are made when diverse voices are at the table. We welcome people of all backgrounds, lived experiences, and identities, including neurodivergent individuals and those with disability, to apply. Whether you've served on boards before or this is your first time, we value your perspective and will support your contribution.
