BTI Executive Search is proud to partner with a highly respected organisation in the waste and resources sector to appoint a Principal Consultant based in their Sydney office. This is a key leadership role for a technically skilled and commercially astute waste management professional, offering a unique opportunity to shape impactful infrastructure and sustainability solutions across Australia and New Zealand.

The Opportunity

As Principal Consultant, you will provide practical waste management and advisory services to a diverse client base while leading the technical delivery of complex infrastructure projects. You will be responsible for mentoring a high-performing consulting team, engaging with stakeholders, and ensuring quality outcomes across design, compliance, community engagement, and project delivery.

This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in waste infrastructure design, environmental approvals, and operational support who is ready to take a leadership position with strategic influence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical delivery of waste and resource recovery projects, including feasibility studies, planning, investigations, and detailed design
  • Oversee environmental approvals including EIS and development applications
  • Design and support operations for waste infrastructure: landfills, capping, transfer stations, energy from waste facilities, etc.
  • Coordinate specialist sub-consultants on large infrastructure projects
  • Mentor and guide junior consultants in technical and strategic aspects of waste management
  • Manage projects including due diligence, waste strategies, market research, financial appraisal, and tender preparation
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, while identifying new business opportunities
  • Deliver clear, high-quality reports and proposals within scope and budget

About You

You are a confident and capable leader, driven by outcomes, and known for your technical expertise and collaborative style. You thrive in a consulting environment and are passionate about delivering sustainable, community-focused solutions in the waste and resource sector.

To be successful, you will bring:

  • A degree in Civil, Environmental or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Chartered status (CPEng) preferred
  • 10+ years' experience in strategic waste management, including at least 5 years in consultancy
  • Strong working knowledge of Australian and New Zealand waste regulations and markets
  • Expertise in infrastructure design, reporting, and validation (landfills, resource recovery, etc.)
  • Familiarity with modelling tools such as HELP, SLOPE/W, AutoCAD
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, reporting and client liaison skills
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and mentoring junior staff
  • Proven commercial acumen and ability to prepare winning proposals
  • Australian citizenship or full working rights
