The opportunity we have available

Organised within the departments Chief Operating Officer Group, the Information Technology and Data Division's (ITDD) purpose is to connect people and technology, empowering the department to excel.

ITDD is responsible for the consolidated provision and support of stable and secure IT Systems, applications, and services to all department users across all States and Territories, including our Indian Ocean Territories and Norfolk Island, as well as supporting seven Ministerial offices, six Groups, and coordination with portfolio entities.

The division provides the digital collaboration and communications tools necessary to connect a geographically dispersed workforce and to optimise hybrid working arrangements. We manage industry and public facing digital systems, deliver desktop services to over 2,200 staff, support over 30 office locations across Australia and oversee the department's cyber security capability.

The advertised position is for an APS6 to join our ICT Operations Team as the Software Support Developer to provide the systems maintenance, operational support, vendor management, business engagement and updates for key department systems. This role is critical in ensuring the department's business applications remain reliable, secure and fit-for-purpose to meet business needs.


What will you do?

The role is varied and dynamic, but typical duties include:

  • Provide technical and operational support and act as a subject matter expert (SME) for a range of business applications.
  • Support, maintain and enhance bespoke applications to ensure they operate securely and efficiently in alignment with the department's goals.
  • Assist with system configuration, troubleshooting, and issue resolution.
  • Troubleshoot application and data issues in a complex integrated environment.
  • Monitor system performance, identify issues, and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency and user experience.
  • Liaise with software vendors and internal IT teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Develop and maintain system support documentation, standard operating procedures, and knowledge base articles.
  • Engage with internal business areas to gather feedback, identify issues and support training activities.
  • Support security compliance and vulnerability management activities across systems.
  • Contribute to project activities where systems require enhancement, migration or integration.

  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues, identify patterns, and develop logical solutions.
  • Sound understanding of data integrity, security, backup practices, and the management of sensitive and confidential information.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience leading initiatives to facilitate innovative ways for software solutions to be used to deliver improved customer experience and business improvement.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the functionality of department-specific applications listed.
  • Tertiary qualification in Information Technology or a related field and/or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • ITIL v4 certification or experience working in an ITIL environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Desktop Platforms, SharePoint administration, database management or Dynamics CRM.
  • Experience developing business applications utilising some of the following technologies and services:
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365
  • Microsoft Power Platform
  • Azure DevOps
  • Azure B2C
  • Other Azure services
  • REST APIs

Eligibility requirements

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

  • Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.

  • Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at NV1. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances.   • Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
  • Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.
