Policy Adviser Allegra Spender MP, Federal Member for Wentworth Applications are invited for the ongoing position of Policy Adviser to Allegra Spender MP. The position is based in the Member's Electorate Office in Edgecliff, NSW, with the potential for occasional travel to Canberra.

This role can be either full-time, or part-time (3-4 days per week), depending on the applicant.

The Policy Adviser will work closely with the Senior Policy Adviser and Chief of Staff to advise the MP on policy issues and parliamentary business. This includes supporting the execution of a proactive policy agenda, advising on legislation and issues arising in the community, and helping to manage key stakeholder relationships.

The key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Adviser on the development and implementation of the MP's policy agenda and strategic goals.
  • Carry out research and policy analysis on key areas to be agreed with the MP.
  • Advise the MP on relevant Parliamentary business (legislation advice, preparation of amendments, policy briefs and proposals, committee work, Private Members' Bills, Motions, Speech Notes, Parliamentary Groups etc.) in conjunction with the Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Adviser.
  • Advise the MP on relevant issues arising in the media, economy and community.
  • Update and advise the Electorate Office team on policy developments/issues and the MP position on these.
  • Maintain awareness of issues via media monitoring and network contacts.
  • Attend events and functions with or on behalf of the MP as required.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, and experience:

  • A background in policy, business, consulting, or economics.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in the MP's key policy focus areas (especially economic policy, climate and the environment, and social inclusion).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Capacity to be proactive, meet deadlines, work flexibility, adapt to change, and work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative team environment.
  • The ability to work under pressure and maintain the highest ethical standards.

Employment conditions:

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement which includes:

  • A commencing salary of $89,798 (pro rated for part time work if applicable).
  • An additional optional allowance of up to $11,610 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

A probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension.

The successful applicant will be required to comply with the Behaviour Standards and Code and may be required to undergo a National Police History check.
