Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Department of Transport and Main Roads Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year

As Principal Engineer (Electrical and ITS), you play a key role in improving road safety by providing expertise for the Camera Detected Offence Program (CDOP), ITS devices and related infrastructure. You support projects through planning, design, construction and maintenance, while also developing technology standards and delivering safety camera and sensor projects. The role may require autonomous supervision and verification of field operations, including travel across South-East Queensland and remote areas where public or alternative transport is not available.

As Principal Engineer (Electrical and ITS), you play a pivotal role in advancing road safety outcomes across Queensland by delivering expert electrical and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) engineering services. You will lead the planning, design, delivery and maintenance of the Camera Detected Offence Program (CDOP), ITS devices and associated infrastructure. Your work will directly contribute to reducing road trauma, improving enforcement effectiveness, and advancing Queensland's transport network through innovative, reliable, and safe technology solutions.

This position combines technical leadership, strategic planning, and practical project delivery. You will oversee projects throughout their lifecycle — from conceptual design and planning, through procurement and construction, to commissioning, operations and ongoing asset management. You will also develop, implement and refine technology standards that underpin road safety systems, including speed and red-light cameras, vehicle detection devices and advanced sensor technology.

By applying your expertise, you will ensure projects meet technical specifications, legislative requirements, and safety outcomes. Your role will be vital in maintaining the integrity, reliability, and innovation of Queensland's road safety programs, particularly those involving enforcement cameras, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) devices, and ITS technologies.

Mandatory qualifications include a four‑year, Washington Accord accredited, Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) degree or equivalent which is assessed and accepted by Engineers Australia; Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) in Electrical and/or in Information, Telecommunications and Electronics (ITEE).

• work and life balance including flexible work arrangements.

• generous superannuation.

• salary sacrificing.

• Registered Professional Engineers of Queensland (RPEQ) Compensation Payment.

• Annual Fee Reimbursement of Professional Engineering Membership and Registration i.e. RPEQ and Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng).
