The Role
Are you passionate about cutting-edge tech, agile teamwork, and making a real impact? Multiple exciting opportunities are now open for S&T5 roles within the Computational and Data Intensive Sciences (CDIS) Group — a powerhouse team driving digital transformation across DSTG.
At CDIS, we don't just support research — we accelerate it. By partnering with DSTG researchers, we deliver high-performance digital science capabilities that empower computational science, data-intensive research, and software innovation. Our team thrives on solving complex problems with smart, scalable tech — and we're looking for people who do too.
We've built some of DSTG's most innovative platforms, including:
- Tiddalik – our on-premises large language model ChatBot
- Katapult – our robust software and machine learning development platform
We're increasingly embedded in DSTG's research community, shaping the future of Defence science through collaboration, creativity, and technical excellence.
If you're a self-starter who thrives in dynamic teams and wants to work on meaningful tech that matters — we want to hear from you.
Role 1 – S&T5 Senior DevOps Specialist
Shape the future of Defence software engineering.
Join a small, elite team of DevOps innovators driving modern software development across DSTG. As a Senior DevOps Specialist, you'll be at the heart of a mission-critical capability — enabling researchers to build, deploy, and scale software using cutting-edge tools and practices.
This isn't just support — it's transformation. You'll work alongside passionate technologists from diverse backgrounds, helping uplift DevSecOps maturity across DSTG. Our team leads by example, embracing modern engineering principles and continuously exploring new technologies to stay ahead of the curve.
If you're a strategic thinker with deep technical expertise and a passion for modern DevOps, this is your chance to lead, innovate, and make a real difference.
Role 2 – S&T5 Team Leader Computational Science Partnerships
Bridge the gap between digital capability and scientific ambition.
Step into a leadership role within the Computational Partnerships Discipline, where innovation meets collaboration. As Team Leader, you'll guide a nimble, high-performing team that partners directly with DSTG researchers to unlock the full potential of digital science.
This team is the connective tissue between standard service offerings and bespoke research needs — identifying gaps, crafting tailored solutions, and building repeatable models that scale across Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). It's fast-paced, creative, and deeply rewarding work.
If you're a systems thinker with a passion for enabling science through smart technology and strategic partnerships, this is your chance to lead a team that's shaping the future of Defence research.
Role 3 – S&T5 Team Leader AI and Machine Learning Partnerships
Lead the charge in Defence AI innovation.
This is a leadership role within the Computational Partnerships Discipline, focused on enabling DSTG researchers and Defence clients to harness the full potential of AI and machine learning — especially in the rapidly evolving space of Large Language Models (LLMs).
As Team Leader, you'll guide a high-performing team that delivers both short-term, high-impact partnerships and longer-term strategic AI/ML projects. You'll work closely with researchers, technologists, and Defence stakeholders to explore smarter, faster ways to build and deploy domain-specific AI capabilities.
If you're a visionary technologist with a passion for AI, a knack for strategic thinking, and the drive to lead a team at the forefront of Defence innovation — this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact.
About our Team
The Research Technology and Operations (RTO) division is home to a multidisciplinary workforce of engineers, technicians, computer scientists, and digital specialists who deliver cutting-edge research services and technical solutions that underpin DSTG's scientific and operational excellence.
Within RTO, the Computational and Data Intensive Sciences (CDIS) Group plays a pivotal role in enabling Defence research through advanced digital science capabilities. From DevOps and software engineering to AI/ML and computational science partnerships, our teams work across DSTG to deliver agile, scalable, and impactful solutions that keep Defence science at the forefront of innovation.
We operate in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where curiosity, creativity, and technical excellence are valued — and where your work directly contributes to national Defence outcomes
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for self-driven professionals with a strong foundation in computational science, software engineering, or AI/ML - and a passion for empowering others through technology. You thrive in agile teams, embrace change, and enjoy solving complex problems in partnership with researchers and technologists.
If you are ready to join a dynamic and supportive team committed to making a real impact in Defence research, we want to hear from you.
