About the role

The Senior Advisor, Government Relations and Policy is a vital role within ANZ's Government Relations and Policy (GRP) team. This team is responsible for managing the bank's engagement with federal and state governments, oppositions, and the Australian Banking Association (ABA), while also monitoring and responding to evolving policy agendas.

In this role, you will contribute to shaping ANZ's public policy positioning and advocacy efforts by supporting strategic engagement with key stakeholders and helping ensure the bank's interests are effectively represented in government and industry forums.

This role within the GRP team will focus on:

  • Identifying and constructively responding to Australian Government policy.
  • Engaging with internal stakeholders to promote awareness of relevant policy developments.
  • Assisting with engagement of federal and state Governments and oppositions; and
  • Helping to manage ANZ's engagement with the ABA.

What will your day look like?

This role is accountable for:

  • Contributing to the identification of, and response to, policy relevant to ANZ in a way that promotes the bank's purpose, culture and values
  • Assisting to build strong and ethical relationships with Ministers and their offices, the staff of central Commonwealth departments and state and federal Parliamentarians
  • Keeping internal stakeholders aware of political perspectives and policy developments so that the bank is well run reputationally, legally and commercially
  • Helping to managing the bank's relationship with the ABA (and other industry groups) to promote the bank's interests
  • Helping to manage the operational risk of the GRP team's activities, including with respect to the laws concerning political donations, competition and lobbying
What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you will ideally bring the following:

  • 5+ years' experience as a legal practitioner
  • Strong track record of building enduring and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Well attuned ability to identify and to respond appropriately to political and policy issues relevant to banking
  • Sound understanding of the Australian political and policy environment
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex matters for diverse external and internal audiences
  • Ability to role model ANZ's leadership behaviours and values
  • Strong understanding of the commercial context and imperatives of banking
  • Leadership experience of high-performing teams
