About the role

We're looking for a Senior Policy Advisor, Building Sector and Infrastructure to join our team at Engineers Australia. In this role, you'll use your expertise in policy analysis, research, and stakeholder engagement to shape initiatives that advance society through great engineering. You'll contribute to meaningful advocacy across public policy, government, and media, guided by our Horizons Strategy. This position plays a key role in driving outcomes across Engineers Australia's policy pillars — building a Sustainable, Skilled, and Innovative Future. It's an exciting opportunity to influence national discussions and make a tangible impact on Australia's engineering landscape.

Location

The role can be based in any of our offices across Australia, (preference Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney) with the flexibility of a hybrid working model

In this role you will:

  • Conduct research, develop policy papers, and deliver advocacy campaigns on issues related to the building and infrastructure sectors, including professional registration of engineers.
  • Collaborate across Engineers Australia's Policy Pillars to influence strategic direction and achieve policy and advocacy outcomes.
  • Build networks with Engineers Australia's member groups, including the Building Sector Community of Practice, and external stakeholders to build and execute programs of public policy development and advocacy initiatives.
  • Provide expert briefings and advice to executives and senior leaders on relevant public policy issues such as building reform, infrastructure policy and investment, the National Construction Code, modern methods of construction, urban planning, and sustainable transport.Represent Engineers Australia at industry forums, government consultations, and stakeholder events to promote the organisation's position and priorities.
  • Support government relations, communications, and member-led advocacy initiatives related to the building and infrastructure sectors.

Here's what we're looking for:

  • Minimum five years' experience in public policy, with proven expertise in policy development and advocacy within the built environment or infrastructure sectors.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build productive relationships across government, industry, and professional networks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to produce clear, evidence-based policy papers, submissions, and reports.
  • Proven analytical and research capability, with experience influencing decision-makers and managing priorities independently.
  • Sound understanding of government systems at all levels, proficiency in Microsoft 365 (and openness to using generative AI), and tertiary qualifications in a relevant field.
