Primary objective
Psychologists work within a Multi-tiered System of Support framework to build capacity of educators to support students to maximise their
educational outcomes. School psychologists perform psychological assessments with students for various reasons using psychometric
testing, observation and interviews with parents and teachers. Consultation, comprehensive assessment, treatment planning and short-term
therapeutic interventions are provided to students with learning, behaviour and personal/social competence concerns that may be having
a direct impact on educational outcomes.
Context statement
Top End School of Flexible Learning (TESoFL) is a multi-campus, alternative secondary education setting catering to disengaged and at-risk
adolescents within the Darwin, Palmerston, and Rural regions. The school is committed to re-engaging students who are vulnerable to social
exclusion, involvement with the juvenile justice system, poor educational outcomes, unemployment, or are in care. TESoFL provides a
flexible, supportive learning environment tailored to meet the diverse and complex needs of its students.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide professional leadership in delivery of psychology services within and across campus teams, including providing effective
contribution to leadership with operational support and coordination and delivery of request for service across the campuses.
- Supervise and mentor provisional psychologists and less experienced psychology staff within the team through provision of regular
professional supervision, including students on placement.
3. Collaborate with the school well-being team and work across multidisciplinary teams to inform practice standards, facilitate place-based
decision making and ensure cohesive and place-based service delivery. This includes participating in the assessment of service requests
from intake through to allocation and service delivery planning for the school multiple campuses and students home school.
- Support students with diverse needs and perform comprehensive assessments in relation to intellectual ability, functional strengths or
limitations, academic ability, challenging behaviours and social functioning. This includes conducting reviews of student progress and
eligibility for enrolment in an appropriate school setting/campus.
- Develop and deliver evidence based Professional Learning sessions in response to the school professional learning plan.
Ensure adherence to the legislations, policy frameworks, guidelines and practice standards and maintain accurate records.
Provide critical incident response, for a range of incidents and for a diverse range of student clients across campuses in collaboration
with the school leadership team.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. General registration (full registration) as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency.
- Specialist knowledge, qualifications and skills to provide a variety of psycho-educational services appropriate for individual, group and
system level intervention for children and young people with disabilities.
3. Proven ability to provide professional leadership, supervision and mentoring in the delivery of psychology services and play a key
leadership role in team operations and high-level practice matters including complex cases.
4. Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and plan and proven ability to be flexible and adapt to changing
circumstances and priorities identified by the principal.
5. Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse
professional, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, which includes ethnic, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Strong facilitation skills and the ability to deliver professional learning and information to educators and the school leadership team.
Demonstrated experience in the management of traumatic incidents and critical incident response and recovery.
Desirable
1. Registration with Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) as a board- approved supervisor.
