Purpose

The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) is a key member of the ACCI Executive Leadership team and is responsible for unlocking and driving national funding and commercial opportunities for the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and the State chamber network.

This role is pivotal to strengthening and diversifying revenue streams by proactively identifying, tendering and scaling federal government contracts, and commercial partnerships at a national level.

Key Responsibilities


• Lead a national commercial strategy, identifying and securing federal government tenders, contracts for service or program delivery, and commercial partnerships.


• Coordinate and drive national funding applications, acting as the central agent across state chambers.


• Innovate and elevate chamber offerings to grow revenue and deepen engagement across business networks.


• Foster strategic partnerships and ensure consistent national engagement.


• Evaluate and scale state chamber specialisms nationally.


• Administer ACCI Commercial Committee governance, including principles, funding allocation, and conflict resolution.


• Coordinate commercial resources allocated from State chambers (on a project basis), and lead and manage the ACCI commercial team (if established), ensuring delivery of strategic objectives.


• Prepare business cases for new commercial initiatives and secure committee approval for funding.


• Report to the ACCI CEO on staff management matters and to ensure commercial outcomes align to national policy and advocacy positions; and report to the ACCI Commercial Committee for commercial matters.


• Represent ACCI and the member of the ACCI Commercial Committee at national forums, government meetings, and commercial negotiations.

• Business Development: Demonstrated expertise in identifying, developing, and securing new commercial opportunities, including federal government funding, strategic partnerships, and innovative revenue streams. Proven ability to drive growth and expand engagement across business networks.


• Strategic Commercial Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver national commercial strategies, including securing federal government funding, driving coordinated funding applications, and proactively shaping future funding opportunities


• Market Innovation & Response: Proven capability to innovate and elevate commercial offerings, respond rapidly to market threats, and drive growth in revenue streams


• Stakeholder Engagement: Strong skills in engaging with senior stakeholders, including federal government, state chamber CEOs, and commercial partners


• National Coordination: Experience in coordinating multi-jurisdictional or national initiatives, ensuring alignment and collaboration across diverse state-based entities


• Governance & Committee Management: Ability to operate within and support committee structures, including developing principles documents, charters, and funding agreements, and managing conflict resolution processes


• Opportunity Identification & Scaling: Capacity to identify, evaluate, and scale state-based specialisms and untapped commercial opportunities to a national level


• Advocacy Alignment: Understanding of the importance of aligning commercial outcomes with national policy and advocacy positions


• Independence & Integrity: Ability to act independently of state-based interests, reinforcing the national mandate and ensuring equitable outcomes for all chambers


• Change Management: Experience in leading organisational change, particularly in shifting funding models and reducing reliance on traditional revenue streams

Training / Qualifications / Licences

  • Bachelor's degree in business, commerce, economics, law, or a related field
  • Formal training in governance, risk management, or compliance (e.g., completion of governance courses, risk management certification)
  • Experience with government procurement or grants administration (training or certification in government tendering processes is beneficial)
  • Project management certification (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP) desirable for overseeing complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives
  • Police Clearance (mandatory)
  • Driver's Licence (mandatory)
  • Eligibility to work in Australia

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development, implementation and maintenance of the ACCI Commercial Committee Charter and Principles Documents.
  • Provide strategic advice and recommendations to the ACCI Commercial Committee on commercial matters and emerging opportunities.
  • Act as an ambassador for ACCI and State chambers at select international forums, events, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and ACCI policies, including risk management and reporting requirements.
  • Represent ACCI in media or public forums as required, in alignment with organisational messaging and policy.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, government policy, and market developments relevant to ACCI's commercial interests.
  • Undertake any other duties or projects as directed by the CEO or Commercial Committee, consistent with the scope and level of the role.
