About the Organisation

The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) was established in 1973 to address the specific medical needs of Victorian Aboriginal communities. 2023 marked a landmark year as VAHS proudly celebrated its 50th year of providing a comprehensive range of medical, dental, allied health and social services for our community.

As well as providing a variety of medical services, VAHS is committed to supporting the wellbeing of the community through contributions to community events and activities. VAHS is also committed to assisting research into the ongoing needs of the community.

About the Opportunity

This position is responsible for the implementation of culturally appropriate services to pregnant mothers.  This position will work as part of a team with the midwife/s, in the delivery of antenatal and post-natal care to women accessing the Koori Maternity Services. The program also includes a general Women's Health Service.

Key responsibilities

Support Midwives & Maternity Services

  • Assist midwives with antenatal and postnatal care.
  • Promote VAHS maternity and related programs.
  • Provide home visits and maintain outreach kits.
  • Refer clients to internal and external services.
  • Contribute to program and policy development.

Health Promotion

  • Support health education for pregnant women and families (1:1 and group).
  • Participate in community networks and case reviews.
  • Maintain client records and support reporting needs.

General Duties

  • Check and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Record appointments, calls, and case notes.
  • Liaise with Aboriginal and mainstream services.
  • Uphold VAHS values and child safety standards.

Prerequisites

  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal Health Work or equivalent or the capacity to undertake training
  • Victorian Working with Children's Check
  • National Police Check
  • Victorian Drivers Licence
