Primary objective

The Assistant Principal provides high quality educational leadership to improve the educational outcomes of students,

maintain the quality of teaching and learning programs, and nurture positive relationships between students, teachers, the

community and stakeholders.

Context statement

Darwin High School is a large urban senior secondary school (Years in the Northern Territory, and has the largest

student cohort in the Northern Territory (approx. 1200 students). The school has a reputation for academic excellence, and

is an Independent Public School. The Assistant Principal works as part of the Executive Team and has primary oversight of

a number of key administrative areas as well as management oversight of a number of faculties, a large year level cohort and

an area of the School's annual improvement plan.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Work with the executive and leadership team, to ensure consistent and effective operation of the school and a shared

strategic vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for students with diverse backgrounds and needs.

  1. Provide whole school leadership of curriculum, assessment, moderation and reporting in line with the school's strategic

direction.

  1. Maintain high standards of pastoral care, behaviour management and wellbeing support for a large year level cohort.
  2. Communicate with staff, students, parents/carers and other stakeholders about student wellbeing and academic progress

and achievement.

  1. Manage and coordinate school systems and resources to ensure education services are consistent with best practice, and

school and departmental policies. This includes timetabling, staffing, budget management, maintenance of student

records and leadership in professional development of staff.

  1. Undertake teaching responsibilities and other duties as required.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Significant, successful recent teaching experience in a senior secondary school context.

  1. Excellent knowledge and comprehensive experience of senior school curriculum (including NT Certificate of Education

and Training requirements), human resource management practices, school administration including timetabling and

oversight of school management systems for a large complex school.

  1. Experience in educational leadership, with a proven record of successfully initiating, managing and responding to change

to achieve positive outcomes for the school community.

  1. High level interpersonal, oral and written communication, team building, conflict resolution and organisational skills.
