This role is based in Adelaide with hybrid working (3-4 days a week in the office) and we have a brand new HQ next to Adelaide airport.

About the role

Fleet Space Technologies is pioneering the future of space exploration and mineral discovery through our revolutionary satellite constellation and exploration technologies. We're seeking a talented Mid level Mechatronics Engineer to join our Exploration team, where you'll directly contribute to our space exploration missions and develop cutting-edge devices that will operate everywhere from Earth's most remote locations to the Moon, Mars and potentially beyond.

As part of the team supporting our CXO (Chief Exploration Officer) division, you'll be at the forefront of designing and developing the embedded systems that power our exploration hardware.

This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of space technology, embedded systems, and exploration hardware. You'll see your code running on satellites orbiting Earth and on devices discovering critical minerals essential for humanity's clean energy future.

Role Responsibilities

Embedded Systems Development:

  • Design and develop software for geode and modem components in Embedded RTOS environments
  • Write, modify, and debug software including Linux drivers, embedded Linux build systems, and RTOS applications
  • Develop robust software interfaces between hardware components on both satellites and exploration modems

Systems Engineering:

  • Participate in Systems Engineering activities including requirements capture, verification and validation planning and execution
  • Provide critical input into hardware processor decisions across Fleet's product portfolio
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of mechatronic systems

Technical Excellence:

  • Provide constructive feedback during code reviews to maintain our high engineering standards
  • Contribute to the development of our space-qualified and field-proven exploration technologies
  • Support the continuous improvement of our embedded systems architecture

What we are looking for:

  • 2-5 years of professional experience in mechatronic engineering, ideally from Satellite or Aerospace companies
  • Bachelor's or higher Degree in Mechatronics
  • Demonstrated ability programming embedded Linux
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work on complex, mission-critical systems
  • Experience working with Microcontrollers and RTOS systems
  • Experience in embedded software development with a strong background in C/C++ or Golang and at least some of Rust, Python
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools such as GitLab runners / GitHub actions

Bonus if you also have:

  • Knowledge and understanding of building services for embedded systems using Systemd
  • Experience with device drivers, device trees, and shell scripts
  • Proven experience in writing multi-threaded software
  • Knowledge of Embedded Linux build systems such as Yocto/Buildroot
  • Experience in SIL/MIL/HIL testing
  • Experience with Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) such as LoRa/LoRaWAN

About Fleet Space

Fleet Space Technologies vision from the beginning was to build technologies to help humanity explore and connect the Earth, Moon, and Mars.

This led us to develop and launch one of Australia's largest constellation of satellites, create our satellite-enabled mineral exploration technology (ExoSphere), and send Australia's first seismic technology (SPIDER) to the Moon in 2026. ExoSphere, our end-to-end mineral exploration solution powered by space and AI, aims to accelerate critical mineral discovery needed for the clean energy technologies foundational to humanity's clean energy future.

As part of Fleet's founding vision, we also apply our technology to innovative solutions for defense and space exploration, including an upcoming mission to the Moon. Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, Fleet has rapidly grown to over 160 employees including a growing team in the USA, Canada, and beyond.

We have raised over $200M AUD in venture funding, backed by premier investors including Blackbird, TVG, Grok, and In-Q-Tel including our most recent $150m Series D in December 2024, at a valuation of over $800m.

In 2023 we were recognised by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) as the #1 fastest growing technology company in Australia.
