Child Health Nurse – Sunrise Health – Big Rivers

Why Sunrise?

Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (SHSAC) is an Aboriginal community-controlled health organisation delivering culturally safe, comprehensive primary health care across nine remote communities in the Katherine East region of the Northern Territory.

Working at Sunrise offers a unique opportunity to provide meaningful health outcomes for Aboriginal communities while living in the Big Rivers region — home to Nitmiluk Gorge, world-class fishing, and an outdoor lifestyle found only in the NT.

What's in it for you?

This role offers more than just a job – it's a chance to grow professionally, be part of a tight-knit health team, and experience a lifestyle like no other. You'll also enjoy:

  • 6 weeks annual leave + 18% leave loading
  • 15 days personal leave
  • Paid study leave for ongoing professional development
  • Salary packaging to maximise take-home pay
  • Strong team culture and professional support
  • Relocation assistance to support your move

What's the role?

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Child Health Nurse to lead the delivery of the Connected Beginnings program in Ngukurr. This role is based in Katherine, with regular travel to remote communities, and forms part of a multidisciplinary team focused on improving outcomes for children aged 0–5 years.

You will work directly with families to provide culturally appropriate care, support early development, increase school readiness, and strengthen community health literacy through education and capacity-building.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored services for children aged 0–5, including growth monitoring, immunisations, and Healthy Under 5's checks
  • Support antenatal and postnatal care, including breastfeeding, parenting education, and early bonding
  • Collaborate with health professionals, welfare services, and families for coordinated care
  • Facilitate referrals and case management to help families navigate the health and support system
  • Promote health literacy and school readiness through education and early intervention
  • Build partnerships across agencies to strengthen program integration and outcomes

What you need to be successful?

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse, Midwife, or Child Health Nurse
  • Demonstrated experience in child health, midwifery, or community health services
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with Aboriginal families in remote settings
  • Understanding (or willingness to learn) of Aboriginal primary health care and social determinants of health
  • A strengths-based approach to working with families and communities
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Current unrestricted manual driver's licence
  • National Police Clearance and NT OCHRE Card (or willingness to obtain)
  • Australian working rights

What's it like living the Big Rivers Region?

The Big Rivers region (a 3 hour drive from Darwin) begins south of Kakadu National Park encompassing Pine Creek, then extends over 500km south to Kalkaringi and stretches across the width of the Territory between the Western Australia and Queensland borders. The region is significant in scale, covering over 360,000 square kilometres and accounting for an area greater than that covered by Germany. The region consists of a number of varied natural environments including vast rivers, tropical forests, rocky escarpments and savannah plains.

If this sounds like a role for you, we want to hear from you.
