About the role:

The purpose of the role is to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Youth and Family Services team ensuring the effective delivery of responsive, safe and culturally competent care and support services. This is with the aim to enhance the capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to care for their children safely at home, in the community and help reduce youth engagement in the justice system.

The Coordinator, Youth and Family Services reports to the Manager, Youth and Family Services and the position has supervisory responsibility for the members of the Youth and Family Services Team.

This position works with other members of the Children, Youth and Family Services teams and with other program staff to ensure effective outcomes for clients.

Key responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operations of the service including the monitoring of the case work and provide support with group activities and programs of the members of the team, ensuring all services are culturally safe and child and family friendly individual and groups/activities and programs.
  • Provide practice information, advice, support, guidance and direction to team members in the delivery of the Youth Participation Program (YPP), Youth Family Wellbeing Program (YFWB) and Mentoring programs.
  • Conduct regular supervision with the YFWB Workers, YPP Convenors and Cultural Mentors within the Youth Team.
  • Support the Manager in day-to-day practice and operational advice, guidance and support members of the Youth Team, including the provision of appropriate supervision and implementation of performance reviews, and ensure program objectives are met through the Programs Practice Principles.
  • Coordinate and/or support individual and team complex case discussions and where applicable ensure that we are delivering a service to meet the family's needs.
  • Work with relevant Coordinators and the Child Youth and Families Intake team to ensure referrals are allocated and actioned in a timely manner and where necessary, maintain and monitor the waitlist.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multi-Cultural Affairs and other community organisations to support referral and shared case management of client families.
  • Support the Manager in gathering relevant information for the Multi Agency Collaboration Panel (MACP) and the Cairns Coordinated Youth Panel (CCYP) panel and where needed attended as a proxy panel member.
  • Assist the Manager to oversee and monitor staff workplans to ensure effective, responsive and culturally safe services are delivered by the Youth and Family Services Team.
  • Monitor and audit record keeping across the service in line with the Human Services Quality Framework Standards.
  • Gather and record statistical data relevant to measuring performance against agreed indicators and participate in review and evaluation activities.
  • Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work within Wuchopperen's Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.
  • Other duties as required, within your skills, experience and capacity.

Core Capabilities:

For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:

  • Minimum possession of a diploma qualification and extensive experience working with vulnerable children, young people and families, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and groups.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and supporting team members in the practice and operational service delivery in human services that provide high level practice advice with a focus on clients' social determinants of health and trauma informed practice to gain long term sustainability.
  • Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Qualifications required in Community Services, Youth Work or an equivalent level of experience and expertise.

Requirements:

  • Hold a current Blue Card (for suitability to work with children and young people).
  • Proof of qualifications is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • Possess a current driver's licence.
  • A commitment to adhere to Wuchopperen's policies and procedures.
  • It is a condition of employment in this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough) and hepatitis B
  • It is recommended for the employee to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
