Senior Network Engineer

Salary range: $129,464 - $142,665 + super

Duration: Ongoing

Location: Hybrid, with requirement to attend Sydney McKell office Tuesday and Thursday each week

About the team

The role sits within Transmission Engineering in the Digital Technology and Innovation Unit of NSW Telco Authority.

You will be joining a friendly, fast-paced, dynamic and diverse team of 8 who are passionate about keeping people and places safe.

You must be able to obtain a minimum Baseline Security clearance within six months to work with sensitive government and critical communications information systems.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Leading the design and architecture of secure, scalable IP/MPLS-TE/SR-TE backhaul networks for the NSW Telco Authority's Public Safety Network
  • Applying advanced protocols (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, RSVP-TE, Segment Routing, MPLS VPNs, QoS, ITU-T Y.1731) to optimise network performance and reliability
  • Providing strategic advice on the evolution of WAN and LAN backhaul technologies, supporting future-ready network infrastructure
  • Developing and maintaining network documentation, standards, and technical guidelines
  • Supporting the development of Ethernet Microwave mobile backhaul networks for current and future services
  • Maintaining accurate network diagrams and documentation through regular audits and updates
  • Managing stakeholder expectations, prioritising workloads, and ensuring timely issue resolution

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate

  • Essential Security Clearance: Ability to obtain a minimum Baseline Security clearance within six months to work with sensitive government and critical communications information
  • Relevant Qualifications & Experience: You hold relevant certifications and experience in IP/MPLS networking, IT, or telecommunications backhaul
  • Project Management: You're skilled in managing multiple projects within tight timeframes and shifting priorities
  • Relationship Management: You maintain strong stakeholder relationships and understand NSW government operations in a dynamic environment
  • Proven Experience in Briefs and Research: You have experience preparing briefs, conducting research, and providing clear, analytical advice
  • Advanced Technical Expertise: You bring expertise in IP, MPLS, Segment Routing, Traffic Engineering, QoS, SDWAN, Ethernet, and network security
  • Telecommunications Experience: You understand end-to-end delivery of telecommunications services, including configuration, installation, commissioning, and integration across optical, microwave, satellite, and carrier networks

The following skills are not required but will set you apart from the crowd

  • Experience with P25 Mobile Networks and LTE EPC core elements

  • Familiarity with Nokia routers and Nokia Service Platforms

About NSW Telco Authority (NSWTA)

We provide mission-critical communications to emergency services, essential services and government agencies to keep people and places safe and connected across NSW.

We are responsible for the Public Safety Network (PSN), which provides frontline responders with a dedicated radio communications platform.

We provide mission-critical and operational communications to Emergency Services Organisations, essential services, government agencies and local councils.

We work with emergency services and commercial carriers to protect telecommunications assets during emergencies and natural disasters.

Essential services keep the state running and include utilities, transport and specialist agencies (similar to ESOs but in a niche area).
