The team

The Sustainability Financial Reporting and Audit (SFA) sector is primarily responsible for ASIC's role in relation to the regulation and supervision of the Corporation Act 2001 requirements for:

  • financial reporting by companies and superannuation funds, and
  • the conduct of auditors.

The Financial Reporting and Audit (FR&A) team sits within SFA and promotes market trust and confidence in the quality of financial reports and their audits by ensuring that companies and auditors comply with the law. We achieve this through financial reporting surveillances and audit surveillances which challenge behaviour that can give rise to poor financial reporting and auditing practices.

The team also contributes to policy development, education, sector liaison and other activities to change behaviour that can enhance financial reporting and auditing practices.

The role

  • Conduct audit surveillances, engaging with audit personnel.
  • Conduct financial reporting surveillances engaging with senior executives.
  • Monitor compliance with the financial reporting and audit requirements of the Corporations Act, accounting, and auditing standards, professional and ethical standards
  • Contribute to technical accounting and audit advice and work collaboratively on complex technical issues that arise from surveillances
  • Contribute to development of financial reporting and audit policy.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders and industry groups
  • Identify and/or support new ways to use data to deliver priorities and communicate insights from data.
  • Contribute to emerging issues and non-adherence with the law and non-compliance with auditing and accounting standards.

About you

To excel in this role, you should possess a qualification in accounting and hold professional membership with CAANZ, CPA, or IPA. Your practical experience in accounting and external audits, particularly within medium to large professional accounting firms or regulatory environments, will be crucial. You should have sound knowledge of auditing, accounting, assurance and ethical standards and an understanding of the financial reporting and auditing provisions in the Corporations Act. Additionally, You will have the ability to plan and work on projects, draft clear and concise analysis and advice on technical matters.

Flexibility, drive, and the ability to work across surveillances and projects is essential. You should have experience in monitoring workflows, contributing to strategic direction, and setting personal targets to ensure outcomes are delivered. You will value stakeholder engagement and understand the importance of building productive relationships. Being adaptable and keen to learn is highly regarded as new requirements such as climate reporting are introduced.
