Who is VAGO?

The Victorian Auditor General's Office (VAGO) is a critical part of Victoria's integrity system. Independent to Parliament, VAGO ensures the accountability of the State Government through audits and assurance reviews of public sector agencies. To achieve this, VAGO annually conducts over 530 financial audits and numerous performance audits across a diverse range of portfolios including infrastructure, transport, health and social services, education, water, local government, insurance, justice, treasury and superannuation. Such a broad range of portfolios allows our people to gain unrivalled audit experience working throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.

We have two audit portfolios within VAGO: Parliamentary Reports and Services and Financial Audit. Our audit support function is split into the Office of the Auditor-General and Corporate Services.

What's the role

Auditors at VAGO are collaborative employees with the ability to balance rigour and innovation in their approach to work. At team members they directly contribute to the delivery of financial audits and assist on business improvement projects as required. They are motivated by the challenge of promoting continuous improvement in the Victorian public sector.

Auditors continually seek to improve their technical and soft skills by actively participating in the audit training program available at VAGO. They are also supported to attain either a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ) or Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) accreditation, via coursework support, access to study leave and reimbursement of fees for subjects that are passed.

Who we're looking for

The ideal candidate will communicate effectively, providing clear and accurate explanations and conveying technical concepts in an easily understandable manner to a range of stakeholders. They will use initiative and sound judgement when undertaking projects and responding to and/or escalating issues, and process technical concepts comfortably, using analytical skills and professional scepticism to reason through problems.

They will promote a culture of inquiry by sharing learning and knowledge, using an adaptive and professional approach when establishing and maintaining relationships and proactively reports emerging issues, risks and opportunities.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • A sound working knowledge of Australian Accounting and Auditing Standards, legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Accounting, Science, Technology, Economics or Mathematics
  • Experience undertaking audits or complex investigations, inquiries or reviews
  • Are currently undertaking, or already hold, a qualification that confers membership to CPA Australia, CAANZ or the IPA
