Key responsibilities of the buyer role include:
Trend Analysis and Forecasting:
Identifying and analysing current and upcoming fashion trends to inform fabric choices.
Supplier and Cost Management:
Building and maintaining relationships with fabric suppliers, negotiating prices, and managing orders. Negotiating favourable pricing and payment terms with suppliers to manage costs effectively.
Fabric Selection:
Collaborating with the owner to select appropriate fabrics based on design needs, quality standards, and budget. Keeping abreast of new fabric technologies, sustainable materials, and industry developments.
Quality Control:
Ensuring that fabrics meet the required quality standards for color, texture, durability, and other specifications.
Inventory Management:
Monitoring fabric inventory levels to ensure sufficient supply for production while minimizing waste.
Collaboration:
Working closely with the design, production teams, and other stakeholders to ensure efficient, on time and profitable fabric sourcing and production.
Skills and qualifications typically required for a fabric buyer include:
• Strong understanding of textiles: Knowledge of different fabric types, their properties, performance, and applications.
• Trend forecasting and analysis: Ability to identify and interpret fashion trends relative the commercial objectives of the business
• Negotiation and communication skills: Essential for building relationships with suppliers and securing profitable outcomes.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills: Ability to analyse data, identify issues, and propose solutions.
• Organizational and time management skills: Managing multiple tasks, deadlines, and inventory.
Experience in the fashion industry: Minimum 5 years experience in fashion among the areas of fabric development and buying, design, product development. Preferred experience with premium European fabric sourcing. Working knowledge of both French and Italian languages preferred.
