The Provisional Fellow is principally involved in clinical research projects including clinical trials, translational research (including projects related to the Nepean Lung Cancer Biobank), estimating prognosis, financial impacts of cancer treatment and quality assurance audits.

The Provisional Fellow will be expected to publish the results of their research in peer reviewed journals. There are opportunities to continue with current ongoing research or to develop new projects. Other duties include the clinical care of patients seen in outpatient clinics. The Provisional Fellow may wish to consider how they could use this year to develop a research program for future PhD candidature.

What you'll be doing

  • Conduct, manage and oversee a number of clinical research projects within the department, with appropriate supervision.
  • Publish the results of his/her research in peer-reviewed journals and present results at scientific meetings.
  • Attend and be integrally involved with the weekly research meetings in the Department of Medical Oncology.
  • Write comprehensive study protocols suitable for submission to regulatory committees.

Essential requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Recent relevant clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
  • Completion of FRACP written and clinical examination.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical research, as evidenced by contribution in conception and study design, data collection and assembly, manuscript writing. Basic knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of information management systems. Experience in use of databases.
  • Demonstrated experience in the clinical care of patients with cancer, including patients on clinical trials.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent's registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

Selection criteria

  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical research, as evidenced by contribution in conception and study design, data collection and assembly, manuscript writing. Basic knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of information management systems. Experience in use of databases.
  • Demonstrated experience in the clinical care of patients with cancer, including patients on clinical trials.
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  • Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  • Advanced ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
