Role Purpose – Delivery Project Manager, BESS

Position Overview

The Project Manager (PM) for BESS Construction Projects is responsible for planning, executing, and delivering utility-scale BESS energy projects from pre-construction through commissioning and handover. This role requires a proven track record of successfully managing BESS projects (or equivalent: wind/solar) across the full construction cycle, strong stakeholder and contract management skills, and experienced coordination with Balance of Plant (BoP), BESS Supplier / Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Network Service Providers (NSPs) and Owner's Engineer (OE).

Project Planning & Execution

  • Lead the delivery of a large and complex BESS project from procurement through construction, commissioning, through to Practical Completion and handover.
  • Manage project scope, budget, timeline, and risks to ensure on time, on budget and safe delivery.
  • Manage interfaces between contractor in a split-scope BESS construction project.
  • Supervise contractors and consultants to ensure adherence to contracts and performance standards.
  • Develop detailed project execution plans, risk registers, quality plans, documentation and communication strategies.
  • Ensure all project activities comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate with regulatory authorities, local councils, communities and industry stakeholders to ensure compliance with permits and approvals.

Stakeholder & NSP Management

  • Serve as the primary client-side point of contact, facilitating coordination between the Atmos delivery team, contractors, and external partners.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, local council, landowners, regulatory bodies, and local communities.
  • Facilitate progress meetings, provide clear project updates, and manage expectations across all parties.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key project stakeholders, including landowners, government agencies, grid operators, council, community, Fire Authorities and First Nations.
  • Ensure seamless communication between project teams, executive leadership, and external parties.

Contract & Commercial Management

  • Working with the Contract Manager, ensure all contractual obligations across all contracts are met, including BoP, BESS Supplier, NSP, OE and CIS.
  • Manage project financials against pre-approved project budget.
  • Ensure contract notices, variations, milestone payment claims and extension of time requests are submitted in line with contractual obligations.
  • Identify opportunities for schedule improvements and cost savings while ensuring the delivery of high-quality on time project outcomes.

Project Coordination & Reporting

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams—including finance, engineering, contracts management, Construction and HSE Management —to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Monitor project performance and control scope, cost, schedule, quality and HSE.
  • Prepare regular project reports, dashboards, and milestone updates for senior leadership.

Risk, Quality & Safety Management

  • Promote a strong safety culture and enforce compliance with all HSE requirements.
  • Ensure quality control procedures are followed and conduct regular site inspections.
  • Identify, evaluate and mitigate project risks associated with safety, environmental, financial, and operational factors.
  • Working with the Owner's Engineer and Principal Contractor, ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards throughout the project delivery phase.
  • Monitor and resolve technical issues, ensuring compliance with grid connection, regulatory, and engineering standards.
  • Ensure timely and accurate HSE notification protocols and proactive implementation of control measures.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Renewable Energy, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience as a Project Manager overseeing full-lifecycle BESS Construction projects (or equivalent: Wind / Solar).
  • Demonstrated success in delivering on time and on budget large and complex Construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of Australian Standard Contracts (e.g. AS4000, AS4902) and bespoke contractual terms.
  • Experience with utility-scale split-scope renewable energy contracts.
  • Proven track record in identifying, analyzing, and mitigating construction risks.
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with Network Service Providers (NSPs) and managing grid-connection processes.
  • Knowledge of local permitting, compliance, and grid-interconnection requirements.
  • Strong commercial acumen, negotiation skills, and ability to manage contractual risk.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Qualifications/proficiency in project management methodologies and tools (e.g. PMP/PmBoK, Primavera).
  • Strong understanding of construction, electrical, civil and grid works and sequencing within BESS energy infrastructure.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office-based work and regular site visits (Qld).
  • Office based flexible working (3 days in office)
  • Ability to travel to project locations and work in outdoor construction environments.
