As our Principal Closure Planner, you'll take the lead in shaping Fortescue's mine closure strategy — planning and coordinating closure activities that not only meet regulatory requirements but also drive our long-term sustainability vision.
You'll provide technical leadership across all stages of the mine life cycle, developing and executing Mine Closure Plans (MCPs) that balance compliance, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
This role is perfect for a strategic thinker with strong technical expertise and a genuine passion for sustainability.
You'll thrive on solving complex challenges, collaborating with diverse stakeholders, and transforming forward-looking closure strategies into practical, achievable outcomes — ensuring Fortescue continues to lead the way in responsible and sustainable mining.
*Key Responsibilities*
- Lead the development and improvement of Fortescue's Closure Management System, ensuring robust standards and processes are in place.
- Oversee the preparation, submission, and ongoing refinement of Mine Closure Plans under WA legislation and Fortescue standards.
- Integrate closure planning into Life-of-Mine (LOM) planning in collaboration with Operations, Studies, Environment, Heritage, and Communities teams.
- Identify closure risks and develop innovative, practical strategies to achieve sustainable post-mining land use outcomes.
- Coordinate trials, research, and studies in soil, landform design, water management, rehabilitation, and ecosystem restoration.
- Support closure cost estimation, financial reporting, and the development of governance frameworks.
- Mentor and support developing closure planners, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.
Qualifications And Experience
- 10+ years of experience in mine closure, environmental restoration, or related fields.
- Proven expertise in developing and implementing Mine Closure Plans under the WA Mining Act.
- Strong project management skills and experience leading multidisciplinary initiatives.
- Broad technical understanding of mine engineering, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and landform design.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience working with Traditional Custodians.
- Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Mine Engineering, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline.
