About the opportunity

This position will provide key contribution to the teaching and research activities of the Governance, Law and Humanities team in the Oceans, Ice and Climate Centre at IMAS. The successful applicant will join an active research group with strong national and international linkages and contribute to, and help develop, a distinctive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching program in IMAS on Antarctic and oceans law and policy. This position is a 0.5 FTE teaching intensive one (thus attracting a 60% teaching workload), with a correspondingly reduced research load (and expectation).

What you'll do:

  • Coordination and teaching in IMAS undergraduate and Master's coursework programs as required, including short teaching visits to Ocean University of China and online teaching.
  • Contribute to the successful supervision of Honours, Master's coursework and research higher degree students.
  • Undertake high-quality research of national and international standing on Antarctic and oceans law, governance and policy, including publishing in quality academic journals.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University.
  • Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities.

What we're looking for:

  • A PhD or equivalent in international law or policy relevant to the oceans and Antarctica.
  • Demonstrated high level understanding of the operation of the Law of the Sea, Antarctic Treaty System, marine governance and Antarctic governance.
  • Capacity to develop a research program in oceans and Antarctic law.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach both online and on campus.
  • Capacity for short-term overseas teaching assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with external stakeholders in marine governance and Antarctic governance.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $155,885 pro rata comprising base salary within the range of $114,766 to $133,235 plus 17% superannuation.
