Festival Overview

The
Australian Antarctic Festival (AAF)
is a biennial celebration of Hobart's role as one of the world's five Antarctic Gateway Cities. This unique festival brings together scientists, historians, artists, schools, adventurers, and the general public to celebrate the frozen continent and its importance to science, climate, and culture.

Hosted by the
Mawson's Huts Foundation
, the AAF attracts thousands of visitors to Hobart and engages audiences through ship open days, school programs, exhibitions, lectures, and family-friendly events. For 2026, the festival is undergoing an exciting revitalisation, with a bold vision to sit alongside Tasmania's most iconic cultural festivals, blending heritage, climate, science, arts, and innovation.

The Role

We're seeking a highly organised, collaborative, and proactive
Festival Director/Producer
to lead the planning, coordination, and operational delivery of the 2026 Festival.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the direction of a nationally significant event and deliver a festival that inspires curiosity, educates the public, and strengthens Hobart's reputation as Australia's Antarctic Gateway City.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead
    program planning and scheduling
    , building on an existing draft program.
  • Manage
    budgets, logistics, risk management
    , and operational reporting.
  • Work with
    government, scientific organisations, sponsors, and arts partners
    to deliver a cohesive, engaging program.
  • Collaborate with the MHF CEO and fundraising team to support
    sponsorship development and partner activation
    .
  • Ensure
    accessibility, sustainability, and community engagement
    are prioritised in all aspects of planning.
  • Oversee festival operations during delivery to ensure a smooth and successful event experience.

About You

We are looking for someone who thrives on collaboration and has the skills to bring complex programs to life. You will bring:

  • Proven experience producing
    festivals, public programs, or large-scale events
    .
  • Strong
    project management skills
  • budgets, scheduling, and reporting are second nature to you.
  • Excellent
    relationship-building skills
    and the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach and creative mindset.
  • Familiarity with
    arts, science, environment, and community engagement programming
    is highly desirable.
