ABOUT US
Gateway Health is a community health service providing health and welfare services to individuals, families and communities across North East Victoria and parts of Southern New South Wales. We are a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and a registered Community Health Service under the Health Services Act 1988 (Vic).
Gateway Health employs over 380 staff, providing a range of primary health and community services across the Ovens Murray region in North East Victoria and parts of Southern New South Wales. Gateway Health serves all people and is committed to improving individual and population health outcomes. This is achieved by providing health care and support to individuals and communities in times of need, and by actively working with our partners to address the social and environmental determinants of health.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Peer Worker to join our supportive team at headspace Albury Wodonga and headspace Wangaratta.
In this role, you will draw on your personal experiences of mental health, wellbeing, and/or alcohol and other drug (AoD) challenges in a safe and supported way to inspire hope, build connection, and support young people on their journey to wellbeing.
You will design, deliver and evaluate peer-led groups and activities, provide individualised support to young people, and form partnerships with local services to strengthen community connections. You will also contribute your unique insights to help improve our systems, practices, and programs.
headspace operates a flexible operating hours structure to support the needs of our clients and their families, which means there will be occasions where client work may extend beyond regular business hours (earlier or later). Therefore, the Peer Worker will need to have some capacity to be flexible around start and finish times. Although this role will be based primarily at Wodonga, all staff employed by headspace will be required to travel to, and work from, the Wangaratta site when required.
ABOUT YOU
You are a passionate and committed Peer Worker who is ready to use your lived or living experience of mental health and/or alcohol and other drug (AoD) challenges to support young people. You bring empathy, hope and authenticity to your work, and you know the power of sharing experience in a safe, supported way. You are a person who lives our headspace values of Kindness, Advocacy and Growth and you thrive in a team environment where collaboration and co-design are at the heart of what we do.
To be successful in this role you will possess:
- Lived or living experience of mental health challenges, psychological distress, mental illness, and/or substance use issues, with the ability to use these experiences safely and constructively.
- Qualifications in Peer Work, Peer Support, Mental Health, Youth Work or a related field (or working towards).
- Minimum two years' experience demonstrating your ability to utilise lived experience to support others whilst maintaining your own wellbeing.
- Demonstrated professional interest and experience in working with young people aged 12–25, including an understanding of relevant developmental stages.
