The successful candidate will play a critical role in fostering a positive and inclusive campus environment, ensuring students feel supported and have access to the resources they need to thrive academically and personally.

As a Student Welfare Support Officer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting student welfare, engagement, and success. You will provide guidance, resources, and intervention strategies to enhance students' overall wellbeing, including mental health support, crisis management, and referral services. Collaborating with academic and professional staff, you will ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Confidential Support: Offer confidential, one-on-one welfare support and guidance to students on a range of personal and academic issues, including stress, anxiety, homesickness, financial difficulties, and cultural adjustment.
  • Case Management: Manage individual student cases, developing and implementing support plans and conducting regular follow-ups to monitor progress.
  • Resource and Referral: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and provide appropriate referrals to internal university services (e.g., academic support, disability resources, career services) and external community resources (e.g., mental health services, legal aid, housing assistance).
  • Crisis Intervention: Act as a first point of contact for students in distress, including mental health emergencies, connecting them with the right services when needed.
  • Welfare Programs: Work with the Student Learning Advisor to develop and facilitate workshops and programs on topics such as stress management, resilience, cultural competency, and healthy living to promote student well-being.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential records of all student interactions and case notes in compliance with university policies and privacy regulations.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Campus academic and student services teams to identify at-risk students and coordinate a holistic approach to student support.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • Diploma or Bachelor qualifications in social work or counselling or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in a student welfare or support role, preferably within a tertiary education environment.
  • Strong understanding of the challenges faced by domestic and international students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and cross-cultural skills.
  • Proven ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Experience in crisis intervention and risk assessment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, and to manage conflicting priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment

Highly Desirable:

  • Qualification and experience in teaching students English as a second language
  • Experience in provision of counselling to students in relation to academic performance and at-risk behaviours
