Postdoctoral Fellow in Antarctic Satellite Geodesy
3 days ago
Job no: 501598
Work type: Full time
Location: Hobart
Categories: Research Focused
- Undertake research in Antarctic ice sheet science
- Use satellite geodetic datasets, notably altimetry and gravimetry, to understand ice sheet and solid Earth change
- Full-time, four-year fixed-term position based in Hobart
About the opportunity
This postdoctoral research position will use satellite geodetic datasets to contribute new knowledge of change in the mass and elevation of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The position is part of a new prestigious ARC Laureate Fellowship team of about 15 researchers who are being assembled to work together on tracking and predicting the future of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The successful candidate will bring their expertise in satellite altimetry and/or gravimetry to this problem to help improve understanding of the change and variability of the ice sheet. They will contribute to building a collegial and collaborative team research environment. Team researchers are well supported by travel and professional development funds.
This is an opportunity to be part of a new and exciting team whilst working at the world's leading Antarctic and Southern Ocean university.
What you'll do:
- Make use of satellite geodesy datasets, combined with secondary model and observational data, to make new understanding of the evolving mass and elevation of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, with attention to systematic and random errors
- Initiate and develop competitive external and other funding applications to support ice sheet science at the University of Tasmania
- Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities.
- Undertake high-quality research/scholarly activities under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team, publish research findings as sole author or in collaboration, to meet and regularly exceed the University's research performance expectations for Level A.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links inside the University and locally and nationally with the discipline, relevant interdisciplinary domains, profession, industry and/or wider community
What we're looking for:
- A PhD or equivalent in satellite geodesy or in a highly relevant discipline
- A demonstrated ability and understanding of research in the field of climate-related satellite geodesy, demonstrated by a record of quality publications, presentations at conferences and preferably success in securing external competitive and other funding, appropriate at this level.
- A record of contributing to building and maintaining effective and productive networks with the discipline, profession, and wider community, including effective collaborative research contributions.
- In depth knowledge of the analysis of satellite altimeter and/or satellite gravimetry datasets for ice sheet studies, to produce time series of elevation and/or mass change, and the potential sources of systematic errors in these data sources
- Experience of working effectively within a team environment.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $125,877 comprising base salary within the range of $83,198 to $107,587 plus 17% superannuation.
