About Acute Psychiatric Unit

Austin Health's Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) is part of the North East Mental Health Service and is located on the Austin Hospital Campus. The APU is a 24-bed unit which consists of 19-acute inpatient beds and 5 statewide eating disorder beds. APU forms part of the broader mental health Division that provides care over 3 campuses - Austin, Repat and Royal Talbot.

About the role

As the Occupational Therapist, you will contribute specialist knowledge and skill with our multidisciplinary team in providing recovery focused care to the acute patient group. You will provide direct clinical services that are evidence-based and also be involved in service development.

As a key member of our team, you will:

  • Deliver evidence-based occupational therapy interventions to individuals experiencing acute mental health episodes.

  • Support recovery-oriented care through assessment, planning, and therapeutic engagement.

  • Collaborate with nursing, medical, social work, and allied health professionals to provide holistic care.

  • Contribute to discharge planning and community reintegration.

About you

You will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You'll bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

To be successful in this role, you'll bring with you:

  • Relevant qualification in Occupational Therapy and current AHPRA registration.

  • Experience in or have a strong interest in acute mental health settings.

  • Committed to person-centred, trauma-informed and recovery-focused care.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work across a multidisciplinary team, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Energy, enthusiasm and passion for a career in public mental health.
