An NDIS disability support worker plays an important part in safeguarding an NDIS participant's well-being. As a support worker, you are responsible for providing support and care to our clients, in the home and in the community.
About the Client
Our client is a woman in her 30s living independently North of the River, who requires compassionate and highly reliable support due to a diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Hypermobility Type) and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
She is also highly sensitive to her environment and has multiple severe environmental and food allergies. She has a strong connection to nature activities and enjoys being outdoors.
This role is about providing consistent, highly safe, and enabling support to maintain her stability, health, and quality of life.
About the Role and Key Responsibilities
We require an experienced female Support Worker (for personal care duties) to join our small team. Essential qualities include exceptional reliability, meticulous attention to detail, and maintaining strict client confidentiality at all times
Medical/Personal Care
Focus on Safety & Detail: "She manages a complex health regime and requires a support worker with exceptional attention to detail and a very gentle, reliable approach to personal care and mobility assistance. Due to joint laxity and POTS-related orthostatic intolerance, movement must always be slow and controlled to prevent subluxations or pre-syncope episodes. Management of EDS symptoms (gentle joint support, monitoring pain levels). Assistance with management of POTS symptoms (monitoring vitals, managing hydration).
Allergy Management
Strict adherence to protocols to avoid known allergens. Preparing meals and snacks using client-specific ingredients. Meticulous cleaning and avoidance of all fragranced products.
Must be 100% fragrance-free (no scented deodorants, perfumes, hair products, or laundry detergents). Must understand cross-contamination risks.
Domestic & Home Support
Light domestic tasks, laundry, and maintaining a clean, low-allergen home environment. Assisting with complex meal preparation (client-led).
Highly organised and detail-oriented approach to cleaning and food handling.
Community Access
Transport to and from appointments (e.g. allied health, doctors).
Assisting with essential errands (safe grocery shopping).
Must hold a reliable vehicle and Full Australian Driver's Licence.
Advocacy and Empowerment
- Assist the client in confidently exercising choice and control in all aspects of support.
- Stand beside the client during appointments or community interactions, helping to clarify their needs and preferences (e.g., repeating complex questions or ensuring reasonable adjustments are provided).
- Proactively identify and communicate barriers to community access or full participation.
- Act as a clear, professional voice for the client in urgent or challenging community settings (e.g. at hospitals, pharmacy check-outs, or medical specialist offices).
- Firmly enforce safety protocols in public spaces, particularly regarding fragrance/allergen exposure and the need for immediate, gentle physical accommodation (seating, slow transitions).
- Document and communicate instances where reasonable adjustments were denied or where the client's rights were not upheld, and report to the care coordinator for formal resolution.
Administration
Accurate record-keeping with strong written and verbal communication with the wider care team.
Excellent ability to communicate symptom changes and follow complex instructions.
Qualifications
A relevant qualification such as the following is highly favourable:
Certificate III in Individual Support, Community Services or Disability Services or equivalent
- Given industry experience, those currently completing studies may be considered.
Certificates (essential, and willing to provide or obtain)
- A current First Aid(HLTAID003 or HLTAID004) and CPR(HLTAID001) certificate.
- Willing to obtain Mental health first aid certificate.
- Willing to obtain A Manual Handling certificate.
- NDIS New Worker Orientation Module certificate (can be completed after the interview)
- Current Working With Children Check (WWCC,)
- NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Current National Police Check (not older than 6 Months)
Motor Vehicle
- Must hold current unrestricted Australian C Class driver's licence and be a confident driver
- Access to a reliable motor vehicle for transporting clients – remuneration for any KM's incurred whilst with a client.
- Current comprehensive and comprehensive motor vehicle insurance on the car transporting clients
Other Requirements
- NDIS awareness, particularly concerning support workers and the importance of choice and control for NDIS participants
- Working rights in Australia (eg. Passport & Visa, Birth Certificate etc.)
- A smartphone with an iOS 13.0 and up operating system or an Android 6.0 and up operating system
- Willingness to accept both short shifts and shifts at short notice
- Must have good availability - able to work weekends and nights.
Experience
The NDIS Disability Support Worker's experience will vary, but the following are preferred:
- Minimum 12 months experience in complex health support, including highly specialised mobility needs and fluctuating chronic conditions. Requires calm, precise observation to manage situations and health changes
- Minimum of 12 monthspaid experiencein disability if no relevant qualificationin Disability or Aged Care or Individual Support
