Role Details:

Visy is seeking a highly experienced Energy Manager or Area Manager to oversee the operations of our Gibson Island Co-generation plant, including the Energy from Waste fuel preparation, Multi Fuel Boiler, Turbine, and three natural gas boilers. This role is critical to ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective energy generation and steam supply for Visy Paper Mill No. 8.

You'll lead a multidisciplinary team including Process Engineers, Boiler Operators, EfW Fuel Prep Operators, and Reject Operators and collaborate across departments to deliver on performance, compliance, and sustainability goals. This is a hands-on leadership role with strategic oversight, requiring deep technical expertise and operational excellence.

What you'll do:

  • Manage all boiler systems and turbine operations, ensuring safety, compliance, and performance against KPIs and budget
  • Oversee Energy from Waste (EfW) fuel preparation, ensuring quality and availability
  • Optimise fuel sourcing to minimise costs and maximise alternative fuel burn
  • Lead turbine and cooling tower operations, ensuring uptime and regulatory compliance
  • Manage reject area operations and boiler shutdowns
  • Develop long-term strategies for energy efficiency and plant performance
  • Lead energy-saving initiatives across the site and paper mill
  • Ensure HSE compliance and environmental reporting
  • Coordinate on-call roster and provide after-hours coverage.

What You Will Bring: 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent
  • Extensive experience in heavy industry (e.g., paper, mining, oil & gas, steel)
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills
  • Expertise in power and steam generation systems
  • Proven track record in asset management and continuous improvement
  • Advanced Boiler and Steam Turbine High Risk Work Licences (or willingness to obtain)
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing and energy strategy development is desirable
  • Advanced Boiler High Risk Work Licence – would be advantageous but can be acquired through Visy if successful for the role.
  • Steam Turbine High Risk Work Licence – would be advantageous but can be acquired through Visy if successful for the role.
