Structural Draftsperson

Position: Structural Draftsperson & 3D Modeller

Location: Remote (Australia-based applicants preferred)

TimberXP is a boutique structural engineering consultancy specialising in timber and hybrid buildings. In just over two years, we have established a strong reputation through projects spanning single- and multi-residential, commercial, industrial, and educational projects, as well as collaborative R&D with universities, government and industry bodies. We combine practical engineering with an innovative approach to construction methods, helping architects, builders, and manufacturers bring efficient, sustainable designs to life.

As TimberXP enters its next stage of growth, we are seeking a dedicated professional to establish our drafting and modelling practice from the ground up. You will design and manage your own workflows, ensuring they are efficient, scalable, and adaptable to project needs, while also setting the aesthetic and technical standard for how we present our work. In doing so, you will not only strengthen the business today but also lay the foundation for future growth and team development.

You'll prepare 2D structural drawings (AutoCAD or similar), as well as scale our 3D/BIM modelling capability with the goal of applying it across all projects over time. This includes modelling in Rhino (or similar), and applying an understanding of BIM principles and platforms such as Revit and SketchUp. As this is a new role, your expertise and preferences will directly shape our drafting and modelling software choices.

Working closely with our engineers, you will produce polished, buildable drawings that clearly communicate with project stakeholders. Over time, there is scope to expand into manufacturing modelling for CNC processing, offering opportunities to broaden skills as the company grows.

Key Responsibilities

• Produce accurate, high-quality 2D and 3D documentation for structural projects.
• Develop and maintain title blocks, reusable CAD blocks, plot styles, and drawing templates.
• Set up and refine drafting and modelling workflows for efficiency and scalability.
• Contribute to the evolution of 3D/BIM modelling across our projects.
• Collaborate with engineers to deliver clear, buildable documentation for architects, builders, and manufacturers.
• Maintain organised drawing files and version control.
• Accurately incorporate customer variations, site-specific requirements, and stakeholder feedback.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a small, dynamic team.
• Collaborate with colleagues in Australia and Europe.

Essential:

• 3+ years' experience in a drafting/modelling role in structural or building design.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD (or similar) and familiarity with 3D modelling tools (Rhino or similar).
• Understanding of BIM concepts and workflows; exposure to Revit and/or SketchUp beneficial.
• Ability to develop and implement CAD/BIM standards, templates, and resource libraries.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Good communication skills for working with engineers and project partners.

Preferred:

• Experience with timber, concrete, and steel structures.
• Interest in timber construction (and willingness to develop expertise).
• Scripting/programming or computational design experience.
