Company:is a 100+ year old automotive and transport manufacturer, who are establishing their first finance company outside their home country.  Australia is a great place to refine a strategy before rolling out globally.

The strategy is focused on the commercial side of the manufacturing (OEM) business.  They will lead with a fleet leasing product and then bring on a commercial loan.  At this stage, consumer loans are not in scope.  

Opportunity: Head up the legal and regulatory compliance obligations of a new finance company, being established by a leading global manufacturing brand. Growth role

Role:  The General Counsel is responsible for providing legal support and risk management across Australian finance company operations, with a focus on regulatory compliance, commercial contracting, corporate governance, and product legal review.

This role collaborates with internal stakeholders and external advisors to ensure the company operates in compliance with applicable laws, including Australian credit and financial services regulations.

The General Counsel will play a key role in drafting, negotiating, and reviewing a range of legal documents including customer contracts, vendor agreements, finance products, and shared service arrangements.

It also supports corporate secretarial, responsible manager, licensing obligations, and legal risk assessments during the company's growth and strategic initiatives. 

While the role has no direct reports to start, this is expected to change as the business gets established and grows.  This role will also hold and manage the legal P&L budget.

Requirements: We will be seeking to discuss this role with applicants showing the below skills and experience:

  1. Australian law degree, ideally with admission as a legal practitioner in Victoria.
  2. Prior experience as in-house counsel for a commercial lender, or related regulatory experience
  3. Project management experience, coordinating external legal advice with internal stakeholder
  4. Future leadership development as this business gets up and running
