The Opportunity:
This is an exciting time to be working at the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) and contributing to the work of the Agency, which is conducted in genuine partnership to enable First Nations communities. The NIAA Legal Services Branch provides the full suite of government legal services to the NIAA.
Our services include provision of legal advice on a range of corporate law, commercial law and public law matters, development of legislation, management of litigation and procurement of specialist legal advice when necessary.
There is an upcoming vacancy for a Principal Lawyer in the Corporate and Commercial Law team. Working under limited direction, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
• contributing to branch outcomes and the NIAA's broader strategic directions for its stakeholders, providers and partners
• conducting research and analysis on complex matters within area of expertise
• providing expert legal advice in relation to grant agreements, procurement contracts, intellectual property, privacy, employment law and other commercial law matters
• providing legal advice, strategic guidance, and analysis on the design, development and implementation of effective legislation and regulatory policy in support of the NIAA's objectives. This is underpinned by contextual awareness, stakeholder consultation and legislative interpretation
• making decisions using sound judgement, expertise and knowledge
• supervising and managing and leading the Corporate and Commercial team and contributing to the development of branch members
• understanding and exercising appropriate delegations and ensuring decisions are governed by the application of regulations, best practice principles or the NIAA operating instructions and procedures
• where necessary, procuring high quality advice from external services providers and providing guidance on the interpretation and application of that advice to the circumstances as required.
The successful candidate will require relevant legal qualifications. Eligibility to hold a government restricted Australian legal practicing certificate with at least 5 years post admission experience is highly desirable.

• strong technical legal and analytical skills, excellent communication and collaboration skills, and experience in providing high quality legal services on government legal issues
• ability to assist with the supervision and development of less experienced team members to cultivate and promote the legal practice, and to maintain professional skills
• strong communication skills, collaboration skills and a solutions focused approach to legal services
• ability to undertake legal research and provide accurate, clear and concise plain English advice
• success in building and maintaining professional relationships, and consulting with internal and external stakeholders
• ability to respond quickly and flexibly while managing competing priorities
• ability to work under limited supervision exercising a degree of independent judgement
• proficiency in managing workloads and statutory time frames.
