Senior Lawyer

Allygroup is supporting a leading Australian Government Regulator in their search for an experienced Senior Lawyer (senior associate level or above) with a strong background in litigation and public law.

This is a 3-month secondment opportunity with a possibility of extension within a dynamic in-house legal team. This role offers the chance to work on high-impact litigation and public law matters in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

The candidate must be an Australian citizen and hold at least a Baseline security clearance.

Location & Availability

• Full-time preferred (4 days/week considered)
• Based in Canberra, Sydney, or Melbourne
• Immediate start available

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and advise on litigation involving claims against the entity, including negligence, defamation, and related actions, in coordination with Comcover.

• Provide legal advice on public law issues affecting the Commonwealth entity, including governance, delegations, and obligations under key legislation such as:

• Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act

• Public Interest Disclosure Act
• National Anti-Corruption Commission Act
• Parliamentary processes and statutory interpretation
• Collaborate closely with internal business teams and senior legal colleagues to deliver strategic legal support.
• Interpret and apply relevant legislation and subordinate instruments, and guide the conduct of litigation matters.

About You

You'll bring:

• At least 6 years post-admission experience, ideally at senior associate level or above.
• Exceptional legal writing and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities across a diverse caseload.
• Proven ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across legal and business teams.
• A commitment to mentoring and capacity-building within the legal team.

Desirable Experience

• Familiarity with Commonwealth legal frameworks, including the Corporations Act, financial services legislation, and Legal Services Directions.
• Prior experience in government departments, agencies, or in-house legal teams.
• Government security clearance (Baseline or above) is highly desirable.
