Seeking an allied health professional with qualifications in psychology, social work, occupational therapy or speech pathology to work in a justice setting as an Intermediary. Intermediaries carry out legislated functions including to assess and report on a witness' communication needs and inform police and/or the courts on how best to communicate with a witness. Intermediaries carry out functions independently and impartially to support the criminal justice system to collect the most complete, coherent, and accurate evidence from a witness.

The Business Unit
The Queensland Intermediary Scheme (QIS) provides intermediary services, which includes conducting assessments of an individual's communication needs, and recommending appropriate adjustments to facilitate communication between a prosecution witness, police, and courts for matters involving child sexual offences, and in doing so, allows for the most accurate and complete evidence to be collected.

The QIS team is a business unit within the Supreme District and Land Courts Service (SDLCS). The SDLCS sits within the Courts and Tribunals Division of Department of Justice and provides administrative support and registry services to the judiciary and court users in Queensland.

The Role
The QIS includes professional officers, known as intermediaries, who carry out legislated functions including to assess and report on a witness' communication needs, making recommendations to the police and/or the courts on how best to communicate with a witness. Intermediaries carry out functions independently and impartially to support the criminal justice system to collect the most complete, coherent, and accurate evidence from a witness.

Intermediaries are impartial professionals with allied health qualifications in psychology, social work, occupational therapy, or speech pathology who then undertake specific training to gain appointment to the panel of intermediaries set out in the Evidence Act 1977. Inhouse intermediaries promote the QIS and guide a panel of contract intermediaries who work remotely.

The QIS currently operates across Brisbane and Cairns Regions. Travel across Queensland or to alternate locations may be required regularly as part of the role, including travel overnight or across a number of days. Some out of hours work may also be required to fulfill service delivery and other operational needs of the business.
