The main role of trainees will be to provide care to medical oncology outpatients with exposure to inpatient care at times as well. Advanced trainees will be supervised by consultant medical oncologists and work as part of a multidisciplinary team with other cancer care specialties (Radiation Oncology, Haematology, Palliative Care and Psycho-oncology services). Advanced trainees have access to multidisciplinary team meetings across multiple tumour streams across the network. Trainees will have the opportunity to undertake clinical and translational research projects (e.g. we have one of the largest lung cancer biobanks in NSW) and are supported (and funded) to attend national and international meetings to present their work. All our sites, especially Macquarie University Hospital, have very active clinical trial units. Trainees will get exposure to patients on phase I -III clinical trials.

Our formal teaching program consists of a weekly (1 hour) tutorial/lecture in various oncology subspecialties and a monthly journal club. We have monthly quality improvement meetings and research meetings. First year trainees are encouraged to attend the Basic Sciences of Oncology course. Trainees will also be involved in the teaching of junior doctors and medical students and our hospitals are teaching hospitals of the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.

The Advanced Trainee may rotate to other sites in the Network including Macquarie University, Mater and Orange hospitals.

What you'll be doing

  • Under supervision, provide a high standard of clinical care to patients in the area of Medical Oncology to uphold quality service delivery whilst building on skills to become competent in the practice of Medical Oncology in accordance with RACP advanced training requirements.
  • Assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and provide ongoing management of in and out patients with oncological diseases and perform procedures and use specialty medical equipment and devices to provide high quality patient care.
  • Communicate patient-relevant information to patients and their families/carers and all staff involved in the patient's care, to ensure shared decision-making and timely information transfer. This includes establishing therapeutic relationships, escalating issues when required, and respecting confidentiality and privacy.

Essential requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
  • Completion of at least four postgraduate years and successful completion of the examination requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent, and be eligible to undertake subspecialty training in Medical Oncology in Australia.
  • This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent's registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
  • Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
  • Aged Care Check for Australian Government funded positions
  • To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
