Primary objective

To assist the Auditor-General in the discharge of his or her responsibilities under the Audit Act 1995 and other legislation.

Context statement

The NTAGO undertakes independent audits for the Auditor-General who then reports on outcomes of those audits directly to Parliament.

The NTAGO's ability to support the statutory responsibilities of the Auditor-General is essential in achieving the mission of helping

Parliament to hold Government accountable for its use of public resources.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Effectively project manage allocated engagements to ensure their completion on time and budget, including providing clear

instructions, support and feedback to Authorised Auditors.

2. Ensure adherence to NTAGO's audit methodology, policies, procedures, relevant legislative requirements and Australian Auditing and

Accounting Standards.

  1. Effectively resolve technical matters arising during the course of work, escalating issues where appropriate.

  2. Liaise with contacts at audited entities and authorised audit firms to remain informed of relevant issues and to build and maintain

professional working relationships.

5. Prepare reports with observations and recommendations that are supported by appropriate evidence and analysis of data.

6. Identify subject matters to inform and contribute to the development of the annual audit program.

7. Maintain and contribute to the development of NTAGO's audit methodology, policies, procedures and guidance.

  1. Assist with reviews of matters referred under the Public Information Act 2010.
  2. Contribute to the preparation of Auditor-General's reports to the Legislative Assembly, including the drafting of content, data analysis,

research and collating responses from audited entities.

10. Maintain membership of professional association including undertaking mandatory professional development.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Degree in accounting, business or related professional field and current membership of a recognised professional association/body

relevant to the practice of auditing (financial reporting and/or IT).

2. A demonstrated knowledge of Australian Auditing and Accounting Standards, and experience at a senior level in audit practice and

management, equivalent to at least three years in professional practice.

  1. Demonstrated sound conceptual, analytical, problem-solving skills, high attention to detail, strong research and investigation skills and

ability to resolve issues, evidenced in both written and oral forms.

4. Good interpersonal skills with a proven strong client focus, ability to consult and negotiate with stakeholders, develop and maintain

positive and productive working relationships while ensuring independence.

5. Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and independently, achieve outputs, with well-developed time management skills,

and experience in working within tight timeframes.

Desirable

1. A sound knowledge of the Northern Territory Public Sector accounting and management framework.
