The opportunity

This strategic role offers autonomy and impact, shaping the future of civil infrastructure for Hobson's Bay. Establish design standards, manage internal and external design resources, and deliver high-quality, cost-effective outcomes across roads, drainage, and transport projects.

As a technical expert and proactive communicator, you'll provide specialist advice across Council, foster cross-department collaboration, and drive continuous improvement in infrastructure design. You'll ensure all design activities meet legislative requirements and best practice standards and take the lead in shaping and development of a high-performing Design Office.

What you'll be doing

• Lead and manage the Design Office, ensuring effective resource allocation and project delivery
• Develop and maintain engineering design standards aligned with legislation and best practices
• Oversee civil infrastructure designs across roads, drainage, pathways, and transport projects
• Provide expert technical advice, mentoring, and quality assurance across design activities
• Drive strategic planning, asset management, and capital works through concept design and feasibility
• Collaborate with stakeholders and manage external consultants to meet project and community goals

What you'll need to succeed

• Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
• Must have valid engineering registration (NER) in accordance with Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019
• Extensive experience with roads and drainage networks, local government infrastructure
• Advanced proficiency in computer-aided design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, 12d) and GIS applications
• Proven complex project management skills, including budget and contract management
• Strong interpersonal, negotiation, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
