Perth, Western Australia Ngaanyatjarra Council Group Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

About the Ngaanyatjarra Council

Welcome to Ngaanyatjarra Lands, a vibrant tapestry of culture and community nestled within the vast beauty of the Australian desert. Home to approximately 2000 Yarnangu (Ngaanyatjarra people) across 11 unique communities, our council is dedicated to preserving and celebrating our rich heritage spanning over 10,000 years and 250,000 square kilometres.

Established in 1981, the Ngaanyatjarra Council Group (NCG) represents the interests of the Ngaanyatjarra People across the 11 communities in the Central Desert region of Western Australia. Employing in excess of 450 people, NCG provides a wide range of services, including health, utilities, construction, employment, community development, shops, roadhouses, art centres and land services. It is one of the largest and most successful Indigenous organisations in the country.

Our Vision:

Representing the aspirations and interests of our diverse communities, we are dedicated to keeping Yarnangu strong on Country.

The Opportunity:

As a Community Development Advisor (CDA) with the Ngaanyatjarra Council, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the well-being and resilience of communities across remote WA.

  • Your primary mission will be to support and empower communities to achieve their goals while ensuring alignment with the Ngaanyatjarra Council's broader strategic objectives.
  • In this role, you will be deeply engaged with community members, leaders, and organisations, fostering strong, trust-based relationships. Your responsibilities will include facilitating community consultations and meetings to gather input and align projects with the needs and priorities of the community.
  • You will collaborate closely with community members to design and implement programs that address areas such as youth development, employment, and cultural preservation, ensuring these initiatives contribute positively to the community and align with the Council's mission.
  • Your role will also involve capacity building, where you will provide training and mentoring to enhance local skills in governance, financial management, and project planning.
  • You will be instrumental in developing local leadership and facilitating workshops that support community self-reliance and growth. Additionally, you will coordinate with various stakeholders to ensure that development initiatives are consistent with both community goals and the Ngaanyatjarra Council's objectives.
  • You will support communities in adhering to governance standards, managing resources sustainably, and complying with relevant regulations and funding requirements.

As a CDA, you will be expected to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively, all while adapting to the dynamic needs of remote communities. Your role will be both challenging and rewarding, offering the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of community members and contribute to the enduring strength and sustainability of the Ngaanyatjarra region.

About You:

  • You are a dedicated and proactive individual with a passion for community development and a deep commitment to empowering remote and Indigenous communities. Your strong interpersonal and communication skills enable you to build and maintain meaningful relationships with community members, leaders, and organisations, fostering trust and collaboration.
  • You possess a relevant tertiary qualification in Community Development, Social Work, or a related field, or you have equivalent experience that demonstrates your ability to effectively support community initiatives. Your experience includes working in remote or Indigenous communities, where you have developed a keen understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities these environments present.
  • Your project management skills are well-honed, with a proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate community-led programs and projects. You are adept at handling multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and working independently, while maintaining a high level of cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse backgrounds.
  • You have a strong commitment to capacity building, providing training and mentoring to enhance local governance, financial management, and project planning skills. Your approach is both strategic and hands-on, ensuring that community initiatives are aligned with broader organisational goals and deliver tangible outcomes.

Your adaptability and willingness to travel and work in remote locations are matched by your enthusiasm for making a positive impact.

If you are someone who thrives in dynamic environments, embraces the challenges of working in remote settings, and is motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the strength and sustainability of Indigenous communities, we encourage you to apply.

What We Offer:

  • Purpose-Driven Environment: Experience a work culture that prioritises purpose and provides a deep sense of fulfilment, aligning with values that matter to you.
  • Flights and Accommodation: Flights and accommodation will be provided to you to allow for a seamless transition into your new role, ensuring that you can focus on making a positive impact from day one.
  • Competitive Salary + Remote Allowance + 17.5% Annual Leave Loading: Enjoy a competitive salary package with additional remote allowance and annual leave loading benefits.
  • Meaningful Work: Contribute to impactful projects and be part of a non-profit organisation where your work truly makes a difference.
