Role Overview

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Mental Health Social Worker to join our frontline team in Brisbane. This role is focused on delivering high-impact, trauma-informed support to veterans and their families. You will work both independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to provide psychosocial assessments, care planning, therapeutic interventions, counselling, and coordinated support—while contributing to our broader wellbeing and community engagement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Client Assessment and Therapeutic Support

  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial and mental health assessments of veterans and families.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualised care and treatment plans.

  • Deliver counselling, therapeutic interventions, and crisis support in line with evidence-based practice.

  • Provide trauma-informed care that promotes resilience, recovery, and wellbeing.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

  • Facilitate access to mental health, physical, and psychosocial support services.

  • Coordinate care with GPs, psychologists, psychiatrists, OTs, and other providers to ensure integrated treatment pathways.

  • Support client education on mental health management, coping strategies, and resilience-building.

  • Deliver psychoeducation sessions to individuals, families, and groups as appropriate.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate, confidential case notes in line with AASW standards, organisational policies, and legislative requirements.

  • Support program evaluation, outcome measurement, and continuous quality improvement through data collection and reporting.

Advocacy and Networking

  • Advocate for the rights, access to services, and dignity of veterans and their families.

  • Represent Salute For Service at outreach, community engagement, and inter-agency events.

  • Build and maintain professional relationships with healthcare providers, NGOs, and veteran service organisations.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) with current membership, or eligibility for membership, of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

  • Demonstrated capability in counselling, case management, and delivering evidence-based therapeutic interventions.

  • Highly developed interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desirable

  • Strong knowledge of trauma, mental health disorders, and psychosocial challenges affecting veterans and families.

  • Experience working with or within the Defence or veteran support sectors.

  • Understanding of DVA mental health programs, funding streams, and referral pathways.

  • Familiarity with community-based, trauma-informed, and recovery-oriented practice models.
