Steel Mains is Australia's leading manufacturer and supplier of complete steel pipeline systems for the transportation of water and wastewater, offering a total solutions approach to its customers.

Our Engineering Services Group in Somerton, Victoria is currently looking for a Design Engineer to join the team. This group of Mechanical Engineers technically supports all aspects of the business from marketing to product, equipment, and process design.

The roles primary focus is capability, safety, and productivity improvements through the design of new equipment and the modification of existing manufacturing plant. The role also covers process improvement, tooling design, product design, and product technical support for marketing and our customers. This is a hands-on position for an experienced engineer who sees their future in a technical role designing solutions that make a difference in the manufacturing environment. Attention to detail, a thirst for learning and the ability to lead younger engineers in their development will be crucial for success in this role.

About the role:

  • Lead design projects including initial concept development, supervision of design and detailed checking of completed drawings.
  • Design and detailed drawings to improve manufacturing capacity, productivity, safety, and reliability
  • Design and detailed drawings of tooling, pipe joints and pipe fittings.
  • Documentation of plant functionality and specification of electrical, hydraulic, safety and pneumatic system requirements for mechanical designs
  • Conduct risk assessments of designs.
  • Direct support of the manufacturing and maintenance teams
  • Provide the sales and marketing teams with product technical support and design information for estimating product pricing and quotations.
  • Assist with installation and commissioning of equipment.

About you:

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree (member of the Engineers Australia or is eligible for admission)
  • 10+ years of Machine Design and Engineering experience.
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to learn and work with others in a team environment to achieve the teams' goals.
  • 3D CAD competence with Inventor, Solidworks or similar.
  • Strong stress analysis and machine design skills
  • Flexibility to complete and check projects from concept to completed detailed drawings.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with all levels of the company.
  • Knowledge of Australian Design and Drawing standards.
  • Knowledge of Industrial Hydraulics and Pneumatics
