  • Casual Grade 2 Weekend Physiotherapist

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and statewide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our goal to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.

About the Physiotherapy Department:

The Physiotherapy Department is committed to promoting the highest levels of care for our patients. In realising this goal, the department will lead and excel in research, teaching and the use of person-centred evidence-based practice. The department provides services on all three campuses of Austin Health, from the Emergency Department through to bed-based services and ongoing ambulatory care.

About the role:

We are seeking dedicated and skilled Physiotherapists to join our Weekend Casual team, supporting a variety of services across Austin Health. This is a dynamic opportunity to deliver high-quality patient care across Orthopaedics, Acute and Deteriorating, Discharge Senior, Stroke/Neurology, and Subacute settings.

A day in the role will see you:

Orthopaedics

  • Assess and treat patients admitted under the Orthopaedic and/or Plastics Unit on wards 8N, The Surgery Centre (TSC), or outlying acute wards.

  • Provide high-standard patient care for a mixed elective and emergency inpatient caseload.

  • Collaborate with orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapy colleagues, nursing, and allied health staff.

  • Develop and maintain clinical expertise in orthopaedic physiotherapy.

  • Document patient management, update Cerner handovers, and action referrals through Cerner.

  • Ensure timely follow-up physiotherapy services prior to patient discharge.

  • Work regular rostered weekends.

Acute & Deteriorating – ICU & Outreach Service (12:00–18:00 Sat or Sun)

  • Deliver evidence-based physiotherapy interventions for critically ill patients, including respiratory care and early mobilisation.

  • Prioritise and manage weekend physiotherapy caseloads effectively.

  • Respond to acute physiotherapy-amenable respiratory deterioration, providing outreach across all wards.

  • Collaborate with medical teams and allied health professionals in managing complex presentations including spinal cord injuries and neuromuscular conditions.

  • Document all assessments, treatments, and outcomes appropriately.

Discharge Senior – Sunday Shift

  • Support hospital patient flow to enable timely discharge, assessing General Medicine patients identified for discharge within 24 hours.

  • Address physiotherapy barriers to discharge and facilitate same-day discharges.

  • Implement early assessment and intervention for short-stay patients.

  • Document patient management and ensure timely follow-up.

  • Work regular rostered weekends.

Stroke/Neurology – 4-hour Saturday or Sunday

  • Provide timely, evidence-based physiotherapy assessments and interventions for patients with stroke or neurological conditions.

  • Complete assessments, treatments, and discharge planning for stroke, neurology, neurosurgery, and epilepsy patients.

  • Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team.

  • Ensure appropriate follow-up physiotherapy services prior to discharge.

Subacute – Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital 3-hour Sat; RTRC 4-hour Sat or Sun

  • Provide physiotherapy intervention to inpatient rehabilitation patients identified by weekday services.

  • Conduct assessments and treatment for patients admitted to subacute wards over the weekend (excluding hoist/Sara Stedy transfers).

  • Review patients post-falls if physiotherapy intervention is appropriate.

  • Document assessments and treatments in Cerner, creating reviews for the next business day.

About you:

We seek physiotherapists who are compassionate, dedicated, and committed to providing excellent patient-centred care. Successful candidates will:

  • Demonstrate significant physiotherapy experience relevant to the clinical area (Orthopaedics, ICU, General Medicine, Stroke/Neurology, Subacute).

  • Exhibit excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Show initiative, problem-solving skills, and flexibility in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrate autonomy and the ability to manage a dynamic weekend caseload.

  • Be a registered Physiotherapist in Australia (AHPRA).

Desirable but not essential:

  • Experience in tertiary hospitals with high-acuity patients.

  • Supervision of Grade 1 physiotherapists or Allied Health Assistants.

  • Proficiency with Cerner, Kronos, Riskman, and other relevant IT applications.
