Universal Store is a leading Australian youth fashion retailer, home to a curated mix of popular and unique brands from local and global designers. With over 100 stores nationwide, we're the go-to destination for the latest trends. We're on the hunt for an experienced and passionate Category Buyer to join our Product Team. This is a full-time dynamic position, perfect for an expert in identifying, analysing, and interpreting trends to create the best product assortment for our customer.

About the Role

As a Buyer, your purpose is to maximise the potential of your assigned product groups by curating an unbeatable product range, managing inventory, and building fantastic supplier relationships. We operate a customer centric approach, which will require your ability to combine historical sales data with emerging trends and influences.  You will play a key role in driving our ethical and sustainability outcomes, making our product better for people and the planet.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Listening to Our Customer: Seeking out customer feedback, conducting trend and competitor research, and understanding the diversity of our customer base.
  • Creating the Product Assortment: Curating a differentiated range of brands and products, preparing sales and distribution plans, and raising purchase orders to drive sales and margin growth.
  • Ethical Sourcing & Sustainability: Monitoring supplier compliance with our Code of Conduct and Animal Welfare Policy and driving environmental sustainability outcomes.
  • Managing Inventory: Managing purchasing budgets, maintaining OTB levels, managing forward orders, and creating markdown lists.
  • Building Supplier Relationships: Onboarding new suppliers, fostering strong relationships, and negotiating to achieve business goals.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • A detailed understanding of the Universal Store customer and product.
  • A strong and demonstrated ability to identify and translate the fashion apparel market and its emerging trends.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Buying, Fashion, or Business are highly regarded.

  • A technical understanding of garment construction and textiles.
