Technical Manager
About The Company
Our client has been a trusted name in horticulture for decades, producing compost, potting mixes, and growing media that set the standard for quality and sustainability. As part of a larger group, they combine heritage expertise with innovative practices, providing a platform for career growth within a high-performing, supportive team.
About The Role
As Technical Manager, you'll oversee production quality, compliance, and product development. This is a hands-on role that combines technical oversight with practical problem-solving, managing composting and raw material processes, reviewing lab results, supporting Stage-Gate projects with R&D, and mentoring the on-site team.
Reporting to the General Manager, you'll have a direct hand in how products perform in the market, ensuring every mix meets spec and no corners are cut on quality. Your time will be roughly split with 25% on-site evaluating materials, 25% on administration, and 50% reviewing test results and supporting product development.
Your responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:
- Overseeing on-site production, testing, and batch release for composts, growing media, and potting mixes
- Ensuring compliance with Australian Standards, certifications, and environmental licence obligations
- Reviewing lab results, troubleshooting, and optimising processes
- Mentoring and upskilling the Lab Technician and other site staff
- Managing customer complaints and implementing corrective actions
The role is based at our client's Kilcoy site, easily accessible from Caboolture, Morayfield, Esk, Fernvale, and Toogoolawah.
About You
We're looking for someone with a strong technical background in horticulture, agronomy, agriculture, or FMCG production environments, with a hands-on approach to process and quality management.
You'll bring:
- Tertiary qualifications in horticulture, agronomy, agriculture, or related science
- At least 3 years' experience in compost, growing media, fertiliser, or FMCG production
- Proven ability to manage quality, compliance, and process variation across seasons
- Strong analytical skills, lateral thinking, and practical problem-solving
- Ability to collaborate across teams and avoid siloed thinking
- A mindset for continuous improvement and career growth
What's in It for You?
This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior technical role within a well-respected horticulture business. You'll work on challenging, varied projects, influence product development, and develop commercial thinking while being supported by a strong, collaborative team.
Other benefits include:
- Birthday day off over annual leave entitlement
- Access to garden products at wholesale prices
- Flexible start aligned with operations - the chance to operate outside the typical "9-5 cubicle"
- Scenic, mostly off-peak commute with practical cost benefits for drivers
