Australia WSP Full time $120,000 - $180,000 per year
  • Step into a high-impact role where your technical expertise and leadership will shape the next generation of grid-connected energy systems across Australia.
  • Use your deep knowledge of power systems, GPS studies, and IBRs to solve complex challenges and deliver real-world outcomes that matter.
  • Mentor talented engineers, engage directly with clients and regulators, and help steer strategic direction in a collaborative, future-focused team.

Are you a technical leader ready to shape the future of energy? WSP is seeking a Technical Director to join our national team—driving excellence in design, delivery, and innovation across Australia's most impactful energy projects.

This is a hands-on leadership role where your deep technical expertise will guide complex grid connection studies, generator performance assessments, and power system modelling. You'll provide leadership through every stage of project delivery—from feasibility and advisory through to execution and commissioning. It's also a unique opportunity to help shape the strategic direction of our business, grow our team, and expand our impact in the energy sector.

About WSP

Our Power & Energy team helps clients maintain secure and reliable power supplies, reduce emissions, and deliver future-ready energy solutions. We work across solar, wind, hydropower, thermal energy, waste-to-energy, bioenergy, battery storage, transmission & distribution, and systems and automation—supporting Australia's transition to a more sustainable future.

Our Power Systems Analysis & Grid Connections team partners with developers, utilities, and network service providers to deliver comprehensive grid connection services across all stages of a project. Our team provides:

  • Feasibility and preliminary assessments
  • Owner's engineer, lender's engineer and technical due diligence
  • Power system modelling and simulation
  • Generator performance standards (GPS) studies
  • Connection application package development (R0 and R1) and ad-hoc support
  • R2 model validation and GPS compliance assessment
  • Ongoing technical advisory through commissioning

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a client-focused leader with a passion for technical excellence, mentoring, and collaboration. You'll bring a consultative mindset, a drive to deliver, and a commitment to shaping the future of grid-connected energy systems.

Your Qualifications & Experience

  • To be successful in this role, you'll ideally bring:
  • A recognised Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Chartered status with Engineers Australia
  • A strong background in consulting engineering, with experience managing multiple projects, clients, and consulting engagements—including client liaison, commercial oversight, and scope management
  • Extensive experience in power system analysis for utility-scale networks, covering:
  • Steady-state, dynamic, and electromagnetic transient (RMS/EMT) studies
  • Grid connection and GPS studies (R0, R1), R2 commissioning plans, hold point testing, and model validation for utility-scale Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs)
  • Proven expertise in the generator connection process under the Australian National Electricity Rules (NER) or similar frameworks, with strong knowledge of Generator Technical Performance Standards (GTPS)
  • An ability to provide advice as an Owner's Engineer, Lender's Engineer or as part of a Technical Due Diligence
  • Proficiency in PSS/E and PSCAD; experience with DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSSE SINCAL is a plus
  • Familiarity with a wide range of synchronous and non-synchronous technologies, including storage, hybrids, and grid-forming inverters
  • Experience with hybrid renewable energy projects, data centre connections, and automation/Python programming
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and produce clear, targeted technical reports
  • Demonstrated success in leading connection negotiations with AEMO, DNSPs, and TNSPs

Leadership & Management Responsibilities

  • Project Leadership: Oversee technical delivery from feasibility to commissioning, ensuring quality and compliance
  • Mentorship: Coach engineers across all levels, fostering a culture of learning and innovation
  • Client Engagement: Lead technical discussions, shape solutions, and build trusted relationships
  • Collaboration: Work across WSP's Power & Energy teams, integrating expertise from renewables, generation, and automation
  • Business Development: Lead and support bids and proposals with a strong technical value proposition and network with new and existing clients
  • Strategic Contribution: Influence the direction of WSP's Transmission & Distribution strategy
  • Mobility: Willingness to travel regionally or interstate for client meetings or conferences
  • Safety & Compliance: Champion safety-in-design and uphold the highest standards of engineering ethics
