About the role
Good Shepherd Catholic College, Mount Isais seeking an experienced and dedicated School Officer - ASL First Nations Education. This role is a term time, fixed termposition completing 30 hours per week across five days, commencing as soon as practicable until 5 December 2025.
The primary purpose of the School Officer - ASL First Nations Education is to work in collaboration with teachers to provide appropriate advice, practical support and guidance to assist First Nation students with learning and development. The School Officer - ASL First Nation Education, under the guidance of the Emerging Leaders Project Coordinator, provides assistance to First Nation students to optimise student learning outcomes in a supported environment with a range of cultural and educational programs. The School Officer - ASL First Nations Education will actively promote student engagement in the Emerging Leaders Program.
The School Officer - ASL First Nations Education will demonstrate competency involving the application of knowledge and skills to a range of tasks to support teachers deliver contemporary learning and teaching. The School Officer - ASL First Nations Education ensures that all duties are completed to an acceptable standard as determined by the Principal.
Key Accountabilities
The Key Accountabilities are as follows but not limited to, and may vary based on classroom and student's support needs:
- Work in classrooms, with teachers, providing support for First Nations students
- Liaise with teachers to determine the progress and wellbeing of First Nations students
- Assist First Nations students in the transition from community to school and be a positive role model
- Provide guidance, pastoral care and advocacy for First Nations students and their families
- Provide awareness to school staff on First Nations student backgrounds and First Nations Community Perspectives
- Support First Nations Students engaged in the Emerging Leaders Program
- Develop and maintain relationships with local First Nations community Groups and Traditional Land Owners representatives
- Assist in coordination and promotion of First Nations cultural education events, activities and programs within the School Community

- Ability to provide information and support to stakeholders regarding First Nations communities
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to the learning needs of First Nations students
Skills
- Understanding of, and ability to develop, links between the school and First Nations communities
- Professional presentation skills with the ability to proactively engage and enthuse both students, parents and other colleagues
- Well-developed computer literacy capacity to work in partnership with classroom teachers
- Organisational planning and coordination skills including the ability to demonstrate flexibility and manage demanding or competing tasks

Mandatory Criteria
- Current Working with Children Suitability Card - The successful candidate will require a paid Blue Card before commencement as per the No Card, No Start policy developed by Queensland Government.
- Current Driver's Licence
- Ability to travel from time to time within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner.
Some employees may be subject to pre-employment medical assessments during the selection process. Depending on the nature of the role, it may be necessary for successful applicants to be immunised against certain preventable diseases in order to minimise the risk of transmission.
Desirable Criteria
- Cert III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, Cert III in Children's Services or Cert III in Education Support
- First Aid qualification or a willingness to complete.
